Summary of Job Duties:

The Research Communicator plays a key role in sharing the university’s research efforts with internal and external audiences. Reporting to the News Director, this position focuses on identifying, developing, and distributing content that highlights faculty and student research. Responsibilities include managing a monthly research beat, writing stories for the university website, and contributing to publications, social media, and multimedia efforts. This position is governed by law enforcement standards, state and federal laws, and agency/institution policy.


Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field;
  •  Demonstrated experience writing and editing.

Preferred Education and/or Experience:

  • Experience translating research or technical topics for general audiences;
  • Familiarity with writing within a brand framework;
  •  Familiarity with higher education or nonprofit communications.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms and content strategies;
  • Experience with basic multimedia tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Spark, smartphone video).

Job Duties and Responsibilities;

  • Develop and manage a monthly research beat to spotlight faculty and student research;
  • Write and edit content for the website, news releases, internal publications, and research-related reports;
  • Collaborate with communications staff to support multimedia and social media content related to research;
  • Maintain a list of ongoing research projects and identify timely opportunities for coverage;
  • Assist with the promotion of major research initiatives, grants, and partnerships;
  •  Identify potential stories for external media and support media outreach efforts.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities;

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines;
  • Knowledge of AP style or other editorial style guides.
