About the role

Shared Services: Animal Care Facility- (Unscheduled, On-Call) -

 

Job Summary: The Registered Veterinary Tech provides veterinary care and animal husbandry for a variety of animal species housed on and off-campus and off-campus as prescribed by the California State Board of Veterinary Examiners. Performs other duties as needed.

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum two years of experience in an AAALAC International (Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International) accredited laboratory animal facility and/or two years of experience in a veterinary hospital registered by the American Animal Hospital Association required.

Knowledge and Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Access.  Must have thorough working knowledge of Public Health Service Policy on the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Animal Welfare Act & Regulations, the Health Research Extension Act, and all Federal, State, and local legislation and policies which pertain to the care and use of laboratory animals. An understanding of the Loma Linda University policy on the care and use of laboratory animals is also a requirement. Experience working with non-human primates and livestock highly desirable. Able to maintain and operate various diagnostic equipment including hematology and chemistry analyzers, anesthesia machines / equipment, etc., per standard operating procedures. Able to perform various medical procedure/techniques including intubation, venous catheterization, injections (SQ, IV, ID, IM), gavaging, bandaging, suturing, etc. Able to operate large 4-wheel-drive vehicles in a variety of weather conditions and terrains. Employee must be able to operate various computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access as part of their technical and administrative duties. Must possess the initiative and incentive to work on his/her own without constant supervision; must be able to work independently and with others as a team. The individual must be mentally alert, possess common sense and excellent judgment.  Must be able to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions. Able to see and hear sufficient enough to recognize sights and sounds relevant to the position.

Licensures and Certifications: Licensed or license-eligible by the California State Board of Veterinary Examiners in all subsections of the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license required. Completion of the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician examination administered by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) required within one year of hire. Valid Driver's License required at time of hire.
