Description
Mosquitoes kill more people than every other animal combined. One species transmits diseases such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya that sicken hundreds of millions of people every year. Applying broad spectrum pesticides is unsustainable as they become less effective over time and can be toxic. Clearing standing water is not enough since it is challenging to find all of the places where mosquitoes breed. Debug is an effort to eliminate mosquito-borne disease using the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). We combine modern molecular biology with robotic automation and machine learning to generate millions of sterile male mosquitoes that, when safely released into the wild to mate with females, cause a crash in the population of only the one targeted species. In concert with integrated mosquito vector control programs, Debug aims to ultimately impact the cycle of mosquito-borne disease transmission.
