Quality Coordinator - Lab Technician

About the role

The Quality Coordinator-Lab Technician reports to the Torrance Plant Manager and, works closely with the AmSty Quality Network, Engineers, Operating and Logistics Technicians to achieve plant Quality goals and exceeds customer satisfaction.  The incumbent manages the plant’s Quality Control Lab, acts as the subject matter expert in Quality programs/tools, enhances the front-line knowledge of and accountability for product quality and serves as the management representative for the plant’s ISO 9001:2015 certification.      

Primary Responsibilities

  • Responsible for lab equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and service coordination.
  • Qualifies new lab equipment, writes new procedures and trains Operating Technicians to use the new equipment.
  • Ensures QC lab is stocked with supplies required for product testing, as well as spare parts that are critical to keeping lab equipment operational.
  • Supports requests for analytical analysis from Sales, TS&D, other AmSty plants, and the Quality Network.
  • Responsible for lab hazardous waste handling and removal.
  • Responsible for the reference polymer testing program.
  • Serve as a resource in support of the plant’s Product Qualification Process.
  • Reviews and updates Operating Discipline procedures associated with the QC Lab.
  • Ensures plant Operating Discipline Procedures and guidelines meet quality requirements.
  • Ensures competency of plant personnel in the use of quality systems necessary to achieve plant/company goals.
  • Develops, reviews, and maintains metrics related to quality programs and monitors key indicators such as Drive-to-Aim (DTA), Control Charts (SQC), Failures per Million Opportunities (FPMO), and Quality Measure (QM) activity.
  • Manages ISO 9001 and other quality systems. Performs and receives internal and external audits and owns associated follow-up work/corrective actions.
  • Serves as Plant Management Representative for ISO 9001.
  • Works with plant personnel to identify issues and improve quality through the use of systematic problem solving and tracking tools.
  • Responsible for quality control in production, raw materials, and distribution.
  • Plant contact for internal and external/customer quality concerns. Responsible for implementation and communication of corrective/preventive actions.

Job Requirements

  • 3 + years of experience in a quality coordination, quality technician or similar role.
  • Knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot gas chromatographs, FTIR, physical property test equipment (Izod, Tensile Yield, Vicat).
  • Knowledge of requirements associated with ISO 9001 certification and willingness to complete Internal ISO Auditor training in preparation for conducting internal audits at other AmSty plants. 

Preferences and Other Information

  • Experience in a chemical, plastics, or equivalent operation is a plus.   
  • This position is part of the Torrance manufacturing organization, and is located at the polystyrene plant in Torrance, California.  Relocation assistance is not authorized for this position.
  • This role is part of the AmSty Technician job family. Grade and salary level offered to the successful candidate will be appropriate to the job duties and commensurate with the candidate’s experience.
  • Call ins on nights and weekends is part of the position. The successful candidate is expected to work some overtime. There will be occasional travel to other sites.

Relocation is not available with this position.
