If so, Global Strategy Group is looking for you! We are seeking a Public Affairs assistant to join our growing Communications & Public Affairs Practice to support the team through early 2025.  

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive research on New York politics and public policy to develop initial client-facing materials, under direction from senior team members.
  • Produce communication materials (e.g., memos, press releases, talking points) with a focus on political and public affairs issues, while collaborating closely with senior staff.
  • Monitor traditional and social media relevant to public affairs, creating detailed coverage reports for clients in the political and government sectors.
  • Support media relations efforts by maintaining targeted media lists, monitoring media outlets, and assisting with research for pitch materials.
  • Assist in stakeholder engagement mapping and outreach efforts, including identifying key stakeholders, tracking interactions, and supporting outreach strategies to ensure communication and relationship management.
  • Provide administrative support to project teams by scheduling, preparing agendas, and taking detailed action-oriented notes during meetings with clients and internal teams.
  • Track project timelines and deliverables, ensuring deadlines are met while helping manage client priorities.
  • Communicate progress to teams and assist with updates on public affairs activities and strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with senior team members to align on communication strategies and approaches, especially around New York politics and government relations.
  • Assist with new business initiatives by organizing prep meetings, managing project timelines, and supporting research efforts for potential clients.

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in strategic communications or public affairs within corporate, government, non-profit or agency spaces, political campaigns, or a related industry. Preference given to candidates with prior internship experience in a political campaign, elected official's office, or government office.
  • Demonstrated interest in New York politics and an understanding of the political landscape in the state.
  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills, with an ability to analyze policy issues and political trends.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Enthusiasm for public affairs and government relations, with a proactive and team-oriented attitude.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills with proficiency in distilling complex information with thorough knowledge of AP Style.
  • Experience using digital communications and social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, blogs, etc. 
  • Team-oriented with a positive attitude and expertise in building strong relationships.
  • A natural problem-solver with good judgment, impeccable attention to detail, and the ability to manage up. 
  • Skilled at working under pressure, ensuring quality and organization across multiple tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with media intelligence tools such as Quorum, Muck Rack, Infegy is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, political science, public affairs, public policy or other relevant field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual abilities are a plus. 
The base salary for this position is between $ 50,000 to $ 60,000 commensurate with experience.
