Founded in 1966, the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations emphasizes the comprehensive humanistic understanding of the South Asian region. Historical, social, literary, and political issues of South Asia are addressed here through close textual analysis and detailed studies of South Asian cultural forms. Preeminently, SALC emphasizes linguistic study and textual analysis; SALC's faculty, alumni, and students are at the forefront of the humanistic study of the region globally. The Department regularly offers instruction in seven South Asian languages (Bangla, Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, Tamil, Tibetan, and Urdu).


Job Summary

South Asian Languages and Civilations (SALC) is seeking a part-time, up to 15 hours/week, administrative assistant to support the South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT) project for a period of twelve months. Responsibilities include communicating with relevant administrative units at UChicago, coordinating with the project's external implementation partners, processing work invoices, maintaining up-to-date budget spreadsheets, fielding email queries about the project, and maintaining the project's webpage.

This position is hourly, hybrid, non-benefits eligible, and has the possibility of being renewed annually based on funding, operational need, and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Communicates with relevant administrative units at UChicago in support of the project.
  • Coordinates with the project's external implementation partners.
  • Fields email queries about the project, and maintains project's webpage.
  • Provides administrative support for SALT leadership. Stays informed of activities relating to programs and initiatives, apprising the director of issues when necessary.
  • Coordinates information flow. Prepares special reports and summaries, assists in managing daily operation of the office, and may assist in developing project goals and policies.
  • Maintains budget spreadsheets. May process work invoices, stipends, and reimbursements.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
  • Provides administrative support for a leader. Stays informed of activities relating to programs and initiatives, apprising the leader of issues when deemed necessary. Coordinates information flow from leader's office.
  • Triages emails and telephone calls for action. Resolves mostly routine and some complex inquiries.
  • Prepare special reports and summaries, assists in managing daily operation of the office, and may assist in developing administrative goals and policies.
  • Coordinates special projects as directed by the leader. Prepares write ups for recommendations for operational and administrative problems. Prepares financial and/or administrative reports.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include vocational training, apprenticeships or the equivalent experience in related field (not typically required to have a four-year degree).


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
