Print Application Developer I

Job Summary

This position supervises and programs the development and maintenance of proprietary software programs used by BYU Production Services and its customers, including workflow management tools, software interfaces with purchased and homemade programs, variable data printing tools, and customer ordering websites (digital storefronts).

Location: This role is primarily based on-site to support strong team collaboration and hands-on engagement. However, there is flexibility for occasional remote work as needed

What you'll do in this position:

1. Customer Engagement & Support

  • Meet regularly with customer base to understand their current and future business needs.
  • Track and resolve customer issues when they occur, providing timely status and feedback updates as appropriate.
  • Develop and document IT business requirements that enhance the products and services offered.
  • Determine future direction over assigned responsibility areas.

​ 2.Application Development

  • Use exceptional data analysis and problem-solving skills to support critical applications, including digital storefronts, Pace, Oracle, etc. Maintain existing programs and design new ones.
  • Assist in determining scope, time requirements, and design for projects supervised.
  • Integrate AI tools and processes into applications as appropriate.
  • Reduce technology debt within Production Services.

3. Personnel Management

  • Manage a team of student developers to accomplish application development projects.
  • Hire and train new employees.
  • Assign specific tasks to team members, following up to ensure project progress, testing, and completion.

4. Other

  • Troubleshoot problems that arise, including production printing problems and answering questions of developers, customers, and other department employees.
  • Provide input to Production Services IT strategic plan.
  • Attend production meetings.

What qualifies you for this role:
Education

Required:

  • AS in computer science or other technology field or equivalent experience.


Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or information systems.

Experience

Required:

  • Ability to be thorough and accurate in data analysis and solicitation of requirements to provide the best information
  • Ability to set and meet realistic deadlines.
  • Technical experience including but not limited to the following:
  • Web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, XML)
  • Databases (relational database structure, database backup and recovery).
  • Demonstrated project management abilities to perform the functions of the position.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to work effectively with programmers, customers, department employees, and the management team to ascertain project requirements, provide support, and maintain customer relationships.
  • Results-oriented.
  • Understanding of AI tools/technologies.

Preferred:

  • Proven track record to quickly pick up IT technical skills.
  • Experience in solutions design, business process modeling, and database design.
  • Familiarity with current development methodologies and best practices.
