The Principal Software Engineer is responsible for technical leadership of the software engineering efforts to develop software, services, and solutions for surgical vision care products.

The role is responsible to derive product software requirements, general architecture, and project timeline by close collaboration with product owners and requirement engineers. The responsibility includes the delivery of software functionality as well as required test- and design documentation and to adhere to regulatory requirements for medical software.

The Principal Software Engineer is expected to also work closely with the R&D department workstream and functional owners – UX, Architecture, Products, Cybersecurity, etc. - to align the product architecture and design with the broader company strategy.

In this role, a typical day will include:

• Actively drive the software architectures in accordance with technological, regulatory, life cycle and organizational needs

• Provide guidance and manage the activities of external and internal software development teams and test engineers.

• Define, coordinate, and participate (hands-on) in software proof of concepts.

• Support and drive the adoption of CI/CD for build, testing, documentation, and report generation throughout development teams.

• Develop, modify, apply, and maintain standards for software systems quality operating methods, processes.

• Conduct evaluation of software development activities including requirements, design, documentation, integration, test, verification, and validation.

• Ensure that projects and process control documentation are compliant with requirements, objectives and/or contracts.

• Participate in intellectual property evaluations and development of patent applications.

Experience:

• 7+ years software development experience

• 2+ years software engineering leadership experience

• Proven experience working with multi-location, distributed team of engineers.

• Proven track record in developing C++ desktop client / client-server applications

• Proven track record in UI frameworks on desktop and/or web

• Experience with architectural design recommendation and guidance

• Experience in working in Agile/Scrum teams using feature driven development, time-boxing, artifacts management, Azure DevOps or comparable tools.

• Experience with cloud technologies and protocols

• Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven ability to achieve constructive solutions in cross-departmental topics, as well as in organizing and motivating team members.

• Experience in regulated software development, medical, automotive, aerospace, or similar

• Familiarity with medical software domain

• Experience with cloud infrastructure and technologies

What You'll Bring to Alcon:

• Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs) 

• The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English

• 5 Years of Relevant Experience
