About the role

About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology™ to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received over $700 million in funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

Generate Biomedicines is seeking an accomplished and driven Principal Scientist to join our Therapeutic Assay Sciences team. This lab-based, hands-on role is ideal for a scientific leader with deep technical expertise and a passion for building high-impact workflows that accelerate the discovery and development of next-generation biotherapeutics. In this role, you will be central to generating high-quality, mechanistic data that fuels our generative biology and machine learning models, driving data-informed design and optimization. You will be instrumental in shaping and scaling the function with a focus on characterizing protein-protein interactions across a range of modalities using state-of-the-art techniques including SPR (Biacore, Carterra), BLI (Octet), KinExA and Gyrolab. This position offers the opportunity to shape both the strategy and execution of critical workflows, serve as a subject matter expert, represent the function on cross-functional program teams and assume people leadership responsibilities as the team continues to expand.

Here's how you will contribute:

· Drive the design and execution of fit-for-purpose binding assays and workflows using techniques such as surface plasmon resonance (SPR), bio-layer interferometry (BLI) and kinetic exclusion assay (KinExA) to support a diverse portfolio and platform initiatives

· Demonstrate a proven track record of efficiently collating, analyzing, visualizing, interpreting and communicating complex data sets using a repertoire of digital tools

· Pioneer efforts to maximize productivity, streamline processes and expand machine learning capabilities by integrating new and innovative technologies

· Collaborate closely with computational scientists and multidisciplinary project teams to align assay strategies with broader program and platform goals

· Serve as a functional representative on program teams, providing scientific and technical leadership across early- and late-stage discovery

· Mentor junior scientists and contribute to influencing the team’s vision, strategy and capabilities as the function continues to scale

The Ideal Candidate will have:

· A Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline with 9+ years of industry experience or a B.S./M.S. with 16+ years of relevant experience in an applied research setting is required

· Deep expertise and extensive hands-on experience in biomolecular interaction analysis using biosensor-based platforms (Carterra LSA, Biacore, Octet) and solution-based approaches (KinExA, Gyrolab) is required

· Strong background in experimental design with a proven ability to interpret and communicate complex datatsets related to affinity, kinetics and mechanism of action is required

· Experience in developing and operationalizing high-throughput or automated assay workflows with a focus on quality, scalability and data integration is preferred

· Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and data visualization/reporting tools is preferred

· Knowledge of traditional protein characterization and developability techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, SEC, SEC-MALS, MS, DSF, DSC) is preferred

· Experience with liquid handling systems, laboratory automation, and/or programming skills (Python, R/R Studio) is highly desirable

· Prior contributions to intellectual property filings or regulatory documentation are considered a plus
