PSE's Engineering Operations team is looking for qualified candidates to fill an open Principal Engineer - Substation Physical Design position!

Job Description

As a member of the substation engineering design team at Puget Sound Energy, you'll contribute to vital projects that power our communities and support the escalating demand for green energy across Western Washington, all while growing your expertise and advancing your career as a Principle Substation Physical Design Engineer.

 

This position requires having substantial experience with developing electrical design, physical design, and construction drawings for high and medium voltage equipment, conduit, and electrical grounding related to the upgrade or construction of a new transmission and distribution substations. Working understanding of current applicable NESC code and IEEE guidelines are essential. Must be well experienced in electrical related calculations, reports, technical specifications and cost estimates.

 

The principle engineer shall possess a broad range of experience, expertise and/or understanding of engineering topics especially related to substation design and construction. Should have the flexibility to deal with shifting budgets and priorities; the ability and resiliency to adapt to changes; and a personality that promotes optimism and synergy.

 

Shall possess QA/QC experience and judgement to quickly review drawings and other engineering deliverables for accuracy, clarity and consistency, and to promote safe, practical, and constructible designs. May provide technical advice and counsel to leadership on technical issues and is expected to provide training, technical direction, and leadership to other engineering positions in order to promote development. The ability to communicate effectively, clearly and concisely, both verbal and written to diverse audiences in any setting is essential.

This job is considered “safety sensitive” as defined in RCW 49.44.240 and is subject to pre-employment drug screening that includes screening for the presence of marijuana and marijuana metabolites.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepares complex engineering plans, designs, specifications, standards, evaluations and studies utilizing specialized analytical skills.
  • Responsible for solving unique problems using advanced analytical techniques.
  • Communicates solutions to personnel possessing a wide variety of educational and employment backgrounds, including in public forums in both verbal and written forms.
  • Ensures compliance with codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements.
  • Identifies potential areas of weakness with team’s work, and initiates corrective action.
  • Documents and shares work with others to strengthen the depth and breadth of skills within PSE’s engineering workforce.
  • Provides technical leadership to others in the department and throughout the company.
  • Ensures that problem solutions are tailored to PSE’s business environment.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry developments and best practices and their application at PSE to further business objectives.
  • Coordinate and review the work of engineers, engineering assistants, field technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments (including contractors/consultants).  
  • Plans and schedules engineering resources to meet department needs.
  • Develops and executes department strategy to support overall business objectives.
  • Supports emergency response work as requested including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil, or other appropriate engineering field.
  • Extensive experience in planning, design, specification preparation, maintenance, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after 10 or more years practice as a degreed engineer).  Yea
