What You Will Do

The Principal Civil / Structural Design Engineer will contribute to a portfolio of commercial and military programs, as well as capital infrastructure improvement initiatives. This role demands strong proficiency in foundation design, structural steel, and reinforced concrete systems. Typical project execution includes interpreting project requirements, developing conceptual designs, performing detailed engineering analyses, and producing high‑quality product definition deliverables. You will work alongside mechanical and electrical engineers within the Test Systems Engineering Group to design new systems for research and development of jet engines and component testing within Pratt & Whitney’s Development Operations. Projects must be executed with a strong focus on safety, code compliance, budget, schedule, feasibility, and environmental considerations. The Principal Engineer will also collaborate closely with local authorities throughout permitting activities and work directly with contractors to support successful on‑site construction. The ideal candidate is a proactive, customer‑focused self‑starter who brings strong organizational skills and the confidence to communicate technical concepts to audiences. They will play a key leadership role—guiding teams, collaborating with A&E design firms, and providing clear technical direction to construction contractors throughout project execution.

  • Develop structural steel and reinforced concrete designs in full compliance with Florida Building Codes, AISC standards, ACI guidelines, and other applicable industry codes.

  • Design foundations for mechanical equipment, building foundations, paving plans, and stormwater or drainage systems.

  • Partner closely with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams to deliver practical, cost‑effective solutions that meet program objectives.

  • Create, review, and approve high‑quality product definition documentation—including drawings and models.

  • Lead civil and structural engineering designs from initial concept through final delivery.

  • Perform plan reviews and provide technical direction to A&E consultants to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance.

  • Actively participate in field construction activities by coordinating with contractors, providing on‑site technical guidance, and ensuring that design intent, safety requirements, and project standards are met throughout execution.

  • Support occasional domestic travel up to 10% for site coordination and project execution.
