Purpose

This position exists to provide Metallurgical knowledge to the Faircrest Steel Plant steel making, refining, casting, and rolling/forging operating areas. This position is responsible to manage a staff of analysts that will provide for around the clock, Metallurgical coverage of the Faircrest operations.

 

Responsibilities

  • Accountable to provide metallurgical coverage of steelmaking operations via the turn metallurgist positions for 24hours, 7 days a week. Responsible to answer off-hour calls to reduce steel making and steel processing delays.
  • As requested, perform bloom quality checks on weekends and thru holidays to continue product flow for downstream operations.
  • Work closely with operations and supply chain to minimize production downtime.
  • Daily review of key steelmaking process variables and order additional metallurgical testing as necessary to determine suitability of materials for intended application and conformance to imposed material specifications.
  • Provide metallurgical and technical advice and support all steel operations, sales, supply chain and direct customers when requested in customer complaint resolution efforts and audits.
  • Insure standards are met and to help determine system suitability of the material for customer orders prior to shipment as well as oversight for the bloom allocation and testing function.
  • Review, edit and approve area business standards that apply to Faircrest and Harrison steel making, refining, casting, and rolling/forging operations in support of TimkenSteel quality systems.
  • At times, conduct high-levels of process analysis and/or project work in the manufacturing areas of concern.

 

Technical Skills

  • Lean 6 Sigma training or similar process improvement training
  • JMP statistical analysis or similar statistical analysis training
  • Extensive use of Excel/Word/PowerPoint
  • Project managing experience
  • Manufacturing experience

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Material Science or Metallurgical Engineering with at least 12 years of material science, metallurgy, or steel making experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Material Science or Metallurgical Engineering with at least 10 years of material science, metallurgy, or steel making experience.
