Description:

The Pharmacoepidemiology Group of the Therapeutics Initiative at University of British Columbia seeks a full-time postdoctoral fellow for an initial appointment of 1 year with the possibility of renewal. The postdoctoral fellows will conduct research using large population-based databases to assess the safety and effectiveness of medications in a real-world setting, and support other provincially and nationally funded research projects, including the Canadian Network for Observational Drug Effect Studies (CNODES, https://www.cnodes.ca).

The postdoctoral fellow will report to Dr. Colin Dormuth, Associate Professor, Dept of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and will work closely with other faculty members, project managers, and staff. This is a funded postdoctoral position although we welcome applications from fellows who have secured funding prior to applying.

The Pharmacoepidemiology Group (PEG) at the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at UBC is a research group that uses epidemiological methods to analyze linked administrative data to answer important questions unaddressed in clinical trials. The primary activities of the Postdoctoral Research Fellow include:
• Conducting substantive, methodologically rigorous pharmacoepidemiologic research analyses using large healthcare administrative databases;
• Writing and executing SAS code to support projects and Ministry of Health deliverables;
• Participating in study design, quality assurance testing, documenting coding methods, and interpreting results;
• Contributing to literature reviews and syntheses;
• Writing research abstracts, summary reports, and scientific articles, and submitting articles to peer-reviewed journals;
• Presenting study results to the scientific community at national and international conferences;
• Identifying and pursuing secondary research projects and research funding; and
• Collaborating with the other research teams.

Qualifications:
The qualified candidate will have a doctorate degree in a relevant discipline (i.e., Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, Public Health or a related field as long as the candidate has a strong foundation in statistics). Minimum of two years related experience. Experience in pharmacoepidemiology is an asset. We are looking for highly motivated individuals with a desire to develop an independent research agenda, and with the following skills:
• Demonstrated skills in data management and programming using statistical packages (SAS and SQL and occasionally STATA and R);
• Demonstrated knowledge of research processes, systematic reviews, and syntheses;
• Education/training and experience in quantitative research methods, and multivariate statistical analysis;
• Excellent communication skills, including strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills;
• High-level conceptual, analytical, and critical appraisal skills; and
• Demonstrated initiative and willingness to work closely with members of a research team.

The position requires the employee to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.
