(557192) Phlebotomist/Clinical Lab Assistant, Pool Phlebotomist/Clinical Lab Assistant, CSU Classification Salary Range: $21.78 – $30.50 Per Hour (Step 1- Step 18), Anticipated Hiring Range: $21.78 - $23.58 (Step 1-5). Final salary placement is commensurate with experience, internal equity, and budget considerations.  This is a temporary, intermittent hourly, non-benefitted, non-exempt, 10-month pay plan.

 

Position Summary:

 

Under the supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, the Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant Pool supports overall operations and performs phlebotomy for use in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems. This position requires specific medical training and certification.

 

Key Responsibilities:

• Performs Phlebotomy – 30%
• Gives appropriate patient instructions for the self-collection of samples – 30%
• Labels and processes specimens for in-house and send-out reference lab testing using the lab information system (LIS) and related paperwork – 20%
• Assists with inventory and stocking of supplies – 5%
• Answers phone and assist clinical staff with lab-related specimen collection questions – 5%
• Disposes biohazardous and chemical waste – 5%
• Other duties as assigned – 5%

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associated with this Position Include:

• General knowledge of clinical laboratory operations and equipment, including an understanding of, or the ability to quickly learn, laboratory safety and quality assurance practices and procedures.
• General knowledge of medical terminology pertinent to laboratory operations.
• Applicable laws and regulations pertaining to clinical laboratory operations and patient confidentiality.
• Working knowledge of CLIA-waived testing procedures, methods, and criteria.
• Ability to collect required specimens for and perform assigned CLIA-waived testing with required attention to accuracy and detail.
• Perform phlebotomy using the appropriate equipment including venipuncture and capillary puncture.
• Use applicable equipment and materials in performing laboratory tests.
• Use applicable automated systems for maintaining and tracking laboratory and patient records.
• Maintain patient confidentiality as required by applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
• Maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff.
• Be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients.
