SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is a member of the healthcare team who works in collaboration with other staff to provide comprehensive healthcare services to patients. The role of the provider is to, under the general supervision of the medical director or other physician, assess, maintain, and improve the individual and collective health status of individuals with substance use and mental health disorders.

Age of Patient Population Served: Adolescent and Young Adult Males/Females

Population Served: Person’s meeting DSM 5 criteria for substance use disorders with or without co-occurring psychiatric illness.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates ability to systemically collect, record and analyze data and other relevant interactive health systems, including mental status, special precautions (suicidality, homicidality, elopement); physical problems/medical acuity (withdrawal and nutritional needs); and ethnic concerns (social, religious, or cultural needs).
  • Knowledge of industry standards: organization, theory, principles, and research processes, quality improvement and change management techniques, accreditation and regulatory standards, ability to assess clinical care requirements based on medical, basic psychotherapeutic, and human development principles, scope of practice, and regulatory standards.
  • On-site
  • Oversee medical care provided to patients; obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, order medications and procedures; authorize admissions and renders admitting diagnoses.
  • Diagnose and direct counseling for each patient on a plan for treatment.
  • Provide consultation/peer review to other physicians/clinicians; supervise nurse practitioner; actively participates in activities intended to improve patient care/facility operations.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and timely medical records about each patient, including observations during examinations.
  • Comply with all laws applicable to internal medicine, including HIPAA.
  • Prescribe medication in accordance with state statute and professional practice guidelines.
  • Review incoming reports (e.g. lab, x-ray, EKG) sign, date and follow-up in a timely manner.
  • Participate in staff outreach and off-site health care programs in the service area as assigned by the Medical Director.
  • Assist in updating protocols and principles of practice as requested.
  • Available for consultation, direction, and on-side care on evenings, weekends, and during off hours.
  • Assist in patient discharge planning, especially in terms of health care needs, meets with patient prior to discharge.
