POSITION: Physical Education Teacher
LOCATION: Merry Acres Middle School
JOB SUMMARY:
The Dougherty County School System is seeking a physical education teacher to join our roster of experienced, motivated, and effective teaching professionals. The ideal candidate is student-centered and passionate about promoting lifelong wellness, physical fitness, and healthy habits. The Physical Education Teacher designs and delivers engaging, standards-aligned instruction that supports students' physical, social, and emotional development while fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and a love for active living.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors' degree or higher;
- Valid Georgia Teacher certification or Charter Waiver Eligible;
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and the Board may find appropriate.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent communication and organizational skills;
- Ability to relate to and motivate all students in a positive manner with respect;
- Proficiency in using instructional technology and digital platforms to enhance student learning and track progress;
- Ability to safely demonstrate and participate in physical activities required for effective instruction;
- Commitment to promoting student wellness, teamwork, and lifelong fitness;
- Ability to perform routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction & Student Learning
- Design and implement engaging, standards-aligned physical education lessons that support physical, social, and emotional growth;
- Provide instruction in fitness, movement skills, sports, and wellness concepts using a variety of instructional strategies;
- Model and teach proper exercise techniques, safety procedures, teamwork, and sportsmanship;
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs and abilities of all students;
- Create a positive, inclusive, and motivating environment that encourages active participation.
Assessment & Feedback
- Assess student progress using a variety of formative and summative methods;
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and communicate progress with parents and school leaders;
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation in accordance with district guidelines.
Learning Environment & Safety
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students by enforcing rules, procedures, and proper equipment use;
- Maintain appropriate discipline and structure to support effective instruction;
- Supervise students during physical activities and school-related events as assigned.
Collaboration & School Engagement
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and community partners to support whole-child development;
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, wellness programs, and community engagement activities;
- Contribute positively to the school culture and professional learning community.
Professional Growth & Responsibilities
- Demonstrate professionalism through prompt and regular attendance and preparedness;
- Stay current with best practices, research, and trends in physical education and student wellness;
- Participate in professional learning and district initiatives to strengthen instructional effectiveness;
- Maintain satisfactory performance on the DCSS evaluation instrument;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor.
PHYSICAL & WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrating and leading a variety of physical activities, exercises, and sports skills;
- Standing, walking, running, bending, stretching, and lifting equipment for extended periods;
- Lifting and carrying instructional equipment and materials (up to approximately 25�40 pounds);
