About the role

The Lead Phlebotomist serves as a pivotal member of the hospital’s laboratory services team, providing both operational oversight and frontline leadership in the delivery of high-quality phlebotomy services. This role is responsible for managing the daily functions of inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy operations, ensuring efficient workflow, optimal staffing, and adherence to clinical and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1.

Performs venipunctures and capillary punctures for patients of all ages and acuity levels including critical care and isolation patients.

2.

Supervise and coordinate daily workflow and phlebotomy coverage across all hospital units, including ER, inpatient floor, CCU, and outpatient services.

3.

Train and mentor new and existing phlebotomy staff, conduct annual competency assessments, and ensure compliance with hospital and regulatory requirements.

4.

Monitor and maintain inventory of phlebotomy supplies.

5.

Ensure compliance with OSHA, HIPPA, ACHC, and CAP and other safety and regulatory standards.

6.

Ensure accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, and timely transport to the lab in accordance with hospital protocols.

7.

Act as a liaison between phlebotomy staff, laboratory personnel, and clinical teams.

8.

Address patient or client service concerns in a timely manner and escalate issues to the Laboratory Manager when appropriate.

9.

Participate in performance improvement, quality assurance, and accreditation readiness efforts for ACHC and CAP.

10.

Ensure strict adherence to hospital infection prevention policies, including use of PPE and handling of biohazard materials.

11.

Lead by example, promoting a culture of respect, accountability, and excellence.

12.

Ability to work independently and manage a team in a fast-paced, 24/7 environment.

13.

Maintain staff schedules, approve time-off requests, and ensure adequate coverage 24/7 including weekends and holidays.

14.

Proficient with EMR and LIS (EPIC, Sunquest).

15.

Provide strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
