JOB SUMMARY:
To support the surgical services department in improving documentation accuracy, data integrity, billing
accuracy and operational efficiency through health information management and data analysis. This position
bridges the gap between clinical operations, health information and data analytics to ensure the highest
standards of compliance, quality and performance in surgical services.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Review surgical case documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory and
hospital standards.
2. Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, and coding staff to correct or clarify incomplete or inconsistent
operative notes.
3. Ensure timely chart completion and support coding accuracy for billing and reporting purposes.
4. Assist in maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations.
5. Compile, analyze and report finding to Director for OR performance metrics such as case volume,
turnover times, cancellations, first-case on-time starts, and block utilization.
6. Identify trends and prepare data summaries for departmental meetings or quality improvement
initiatives.
7. Support the development of dashboards or visual tools to track key indicators.
8. Participate in performance improvement projects focused on surgical efficiency, safety, and quality
outcomes.
9. Use Lean or Six Sigma methods to recommend workflow optimizations based on data findings.
10. Assist with audits related to surgical case documentation, supply usage, or scheduling accuracy.
11. Learn and utilize EHR analytics tools (Meditech, BCA, SIS, Excel) for departmental reporting.
12. Serve as a liaison between clinical, health information, and data teams to ensure reliable, actionable information is available for decision-making.
13. Review charges and compare operative reports for accurate billing
14. Work with billing and materials to obtain charge codes and apply to surgical billing
15. Improve efficiency of surgery billing and decrease the amount of time it takes to drop charges
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Physically demanding, high stress environment
2. Occasional exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
3. Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients
4. Manual and finger dexterity
5. Hand and eye coordination
6. Sitting, standing, and walking for extensive periods of time
7. Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
8. Frequently sitting at desk working on computer
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION – MANDATORY:
·High School Diploma or equivalent
Health Information Technology Certification or Obtaining
· Knowledge of medical terminology, surgical procedures, and documentation requirements within the
OR.
· Advance technology knowledge and ability to utilize multiple computer programs
· Ability to understand the key elements involved with surgical billing
PREFERRED:
· Two years of surgical service experience
· Advanced computer skills (e.g. Microsoft, Power point, Excel)
