The Pharmacy Technician – Inpatient, PRN supports inpatient pharmacy operations at Avon Hospital, a growing 126-bed community hospital, by helping ensure medications are prepared, distributed, and delivered safely and efficiently across multiple patient care areas. In addition to medication distribution and inventory management, this caregiver operates pharmacy automation systems, including the medication carousel and Pyxis automated dispensing cabinets, performs sterile compounding, triages medication requests and pharmacy phone calls, delivers medications throughout the hospital, and assists with inventory control and medication replenishment. This role offers the opportunity to support a collaborative pharmacy team while contributing to high-quality patient care in a dynamic inpatient environment.

This is a PRN role. A caregiver in this position will work flexible shifts based on departmental needs, including 7:00am to 3:30pm, 7:30am to 4:00pm, 11:30am to 8:00pm, or 1:30pm to 10:00pm. There are no minimum weekend or holiday requirements for PRN caregivers, though availability for at least one weekday shift and one weekend shift per month is preferred. Caregivers should have flexible availability and can expect to work approximately 1–2 shifts per month, depending on department needs.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide distributive pharmacy services, assistance and support for the Registered Pharmacist.  
  • Refill and maintain automated dispensing systems.  
  • Fill medications carts daily.  
  • Prepare orders and maintain inventory for the pharmacy department.  
  • Repackage bulk medications.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED.   
  • Upon hire, must be a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or National HealthCareer Association (NHA).
  • Upon hire, it is required to hold an active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician, or Pharmacy Technician Trainee.
  • Caregivers with active Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations are required to update their registration to a Certified Pharmacy Technician registration with the OBOP within 6 months. 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Completion of a formal Pharmacy Technician Training Program  
  • Six months of hospital experience

Physical Requirements:

  • Typical physical demands include ability to perform functions of the job while reaching and stretching, and manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer functions of job.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
