Inpatient Job Description

Inpatient Pharmacy Technician 
The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician assists with the preparation and dispensing of medications for patients served by Broadlawns Medical Center Inpatient Pharmacy and Clinics.  All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Schedule 
Variable shifts: 6:30am-11:00pm

Qualifications 

• Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy prior to starting employment

• Current CPhT Certification

• Ability to effectively communicate with patients, coworkers, and vendor partners 

• Math aptitude with the ability to perform dosage or quantity calculations accurately

• Experience with pyxis preferred 

• IV Compounding Experience preferred

• Knowledge of medical terminology, including generic and brand name pharmaceuticals 

Outpatient Job Description

The Outpatient Pharmacy Technician assists with the preparation and dispensing of medications for patients served by Broadlawns Medical Center Outpatient Pharmacy.  All duties are performed under the direct supervision of a registered pharmacist.

Outpatient Pharmacy Technician Roles and Responsibilities:

• Fosters a team environment by working cooperatively with all staff.  Assists coworkers in tasks, as time permits.  Voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate persons in a positive manner.

• Prepares medication for distribution to patients.

• Distributes dispensed prescriptions to patients or their representatives.

• Manages prescription files.

• Provides courteous, cooperative, and timely service to patients, visitors, and staff.

• Performs routine maintenance and accuracy verification of automated dispensing machine and other technologies as needed.

• Stocks automated dispensing machine according to established policies and procedures.

• Performs work within specified time frames and able to adapt positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule.

• Maintains strict confidentiality of patient, visitor, and employee information.

• Maintains clean work areas.

• Completes inspection of assigned medication on a monthly basis.

• Assists in training of new technicians, pharmacy interns and College of Pharmacy clerkship students as requested by supervisor.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Pharmacy Hours:

• Variable Shifts: 8am-8pm Monday-Friday, Saturday 8am-4pm

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent

• Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy before start of employment

• CPhT Certification

• Ability to interact with patients, co-workers and other medical center personnel in person or by telephone in a pleasant, courteous ma
