A Brief Overview
The Pharmacy Technician 3 is accountable for assisting pharmacists in the retrieval, processing, preparation, and distribution of medications for patient administration. The Technician 3 functions in all aspects of drug distribution that do not require the professional judgment of a pharmacist. All above assigned activities are performed under the supervision of a Pharmacist. The Technician 3 is responsible for the interviewing, onboarding, and/or orienting new or current staff on the daily duties and operations of the pharmacy.
What You Will Do
- Manage the receipt, storage, distribution, and documentation of controlled substances within the inpatient pharmacy
- Maintain strict compliance with DEA regulations, state pharmacy laws, hospitals policies, and controlled substance handling procedures
- Perform controlled substance cycle counts, inventory optimization, inventory audits, departmental audits, regulatory inspections, and compliance reviews on a routine basis
- Review and process controlled substance returns, waste, and expired medications
- Repackage medications in accordance with pharmacy regulations, safety standards, and hospitals policies to ensure accurate labeling, tracking, and distribution
- Maintain and restock EMS boxes to support uninterrupted patient care services
- Attend pharmacy huddles and developmental meetings and ensure clear and thorough shift handoff communication related to controlled substance operations
- Provide on call coverage
- For Inpatient Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:
• Accurate preparation of patient medications including non-sterile products, sterile products (including chemotherapy and TPN).
• Accurate and timely delivery of patient specific medications.
• Inventories, replenishes, and maintains drug stock.
• Orients and trains new staff.
• Educate staff on process improvement and safety initiatives.
• Serve as a mentor and develop role models for technical staff.
• Compliance with Technician Ladder assignments. - For Outpatient Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:
• Utilizes pharmacy systems to process prescriptions, including insurance adjudication and prior authorization submittal, and accurately prepares dangerous drugs for dispensing including counting, pouring, labeling, and performing non-sterile drug compounding and reconstitution.
• Inventory, replenish, and maintain drug stock which includes automated dispensing cabinets and prescription pick-up kiosks.
• Packaging and selling dangerous drugs to a patient or patient representative and answering questions to ensure a positive patient experience.
• Inventory management including par levels, order review and submission, returns processing, recall management, and outdates process oversite.
• Provides direction to technician staff on day to day operations and performs extensive trainer duties with new hires and/or technician trainees.
• Extensive buyer duties including purchasing, invoice processing, cost transferring, and specialized ordering. - For Medication History Pharmacy Tech 3, activities include but are not limited to:
• Support medication history collection process for ED and inpatient units utilizing appropriate sources and communication.
• Communicate effectively with patients during the interview and accurately record the medication history.
• Maintain open communication with nurses, patient care technicians, practitioners, and other personnel in the hospital to report important findings.
