Occupational Summary
Perform and coordinate complex administrative payroll duties and operational activities involved in the preparation and processing of Duke University and Health System payrolls; assume the duties of Team Lead, Financial Services
Work Performed
- Coordinate and supervise complex administrative duties involved in the preparation and processing of the University and Health System payrolls to ensure timely and accurate delivery of pay.
- Assist the Payroll Manager in managing the activities of the Payroll Processing section. This includes but is not limited to training, documentation of processes, providing counseling and recommending disciplinary action when appropriate. Monitor processing workload and advise the Payroll Manager as needed.
- Oversee complex transactions such as legal settlements, wage overpayments, unclaimed property and multistate taxation.
- In conjunction with Payroll Manager, review, revise and implement payroll processes to ensure compliance with university policy, Federal and State mandates.
- Review, audit, and verify forms requiring master data changes to ensure regulatory compliance is met. Review and process iForms transactions accurately based upon payroll schedules.
- Process, coordinate, and run payroll preview for out of cycle or additional payments requests.
- Research and communicate with employees/departments to ensure proper information is provided in a timely manner, and/or that inquiries are routed to appropriate departmental officials/staff for action.
- Supervise other team members in the absence of the Payroll Manager to coordinate, prioritize, and organize activities to meet established goals and assigned deadlines.

Qualifications:
The most competitive candidates will have demonstrated ability in the areas detailed above. In addition, internal Duke experience and knowledge (or understanding of a complex administrative structure) will prove advantageous in this fast-paced environment. A candidate who is detail-oriented, works well in a structured environment, has the ability to multi-task and prioritize work accordingly to meet deadlines while staying on task to complete other assigned duties and responsibilities. Has strong customer service skills and possesses the essential tools needed to succeed in this position.
Work generally requires a bachelor’s degree in Business administration, Accounting or related field.
Experience:
Work requires four years of progressive experience in Payroll processing. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
