This is a park management training position. Successful candidates will complete training in the areas of facility management, general park maintenance, visitor information center administration, interpretation, various aspects of emergency services, and supervision.  The training may occur at various state parks, but housing with furnishings will be provided.  Aspects of the training include identifying and performing tasks in each area mentioned above, maintaining park records, accounting, and bookkeeping functions, preparing weekly reports, supervising employees, and overseeing operations at various park facilities at training locations. A criminal background check and a driver’s record check are required.

Applicants must meet or exceed the following qualifications: The formal educational equivalent of a bachelor's degree in park administration, parks and recreation management, natural science, recreation administration, or a related field; plus one year of experience in park management, including six months in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or licensure requirements, upon approval of the qualifications review committee.

 

The successful candidate will be required to a sign a contract agreement to work a specified length of service in exchange for full compensation and benefits during training.

Summary

The Park Superintendent I is responsible for overseeing the operation and facilities of specific portions of a large park. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Supervises a small staff of regular and seasonal, professional, technical, administrative support and service workers by interviewing, recommending for hire, training, assigning and reviewing work, and evaluating the performance of incumbents. Oversees the operation of a specific portion of a large park, such as a boat rental facility, visitor information center, snack bar, or other park facility. Prepares and manages a park budget, and monitors daily expenditures and the scheduling of work hours for regular and extra help employees to prevent overspending. Participates as part of a planning team to develop or expand programs and facilities, alter procedures, determine revenue sources and cost containment, and monitor operations, facilities, and programs to ensure that goals are met. Develops operating plans and schedules for year-round operations, including preventative and routine maintenance schedules, construction projects, and special events, and estimates materials, manpower, equipment, time, revenue, and costs required to support operations. Assists Emergency Services section on scheduling and job assignments of law enforcement staff. Participates in or leads search and rescue teams to rescue climbers, stranded boaters, or lost visitors and administers emergency first aid to accident or illness victims.
