BHE GT&S, a Berkshire Hathaway Energy company, has an exciting opportunity for a Paralegal or Senior Paralegal at our headquarters in Glen Allen, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond. 


BHE GT&S is seeking an experienced paralegal to support its interstate natural gas pipeline and related businesses. The position will be filled at a level determined by the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This is a full-time in-office position although flexible work hours may be permitted based on individual/business need(s). 

Specifically, the Paralegal coordinates federal regulatory matters including contracts, filings, discovery responses and document requests for rate, tariff, and certificate proceedings.  Monitors FERC regulatory developments. Works with in-house counsel on supply chain and construction contracts.

Paralegal: 

  • Assist in preparing and filing federal regulatory proceedings.
  • Monitor compliance with federal regulations.
  • Assist in the management of rate case discovery and the use of database applications to process document requests, interrogatories, and data requests.
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing supply chain agreements and other types of commercial contracts.  
  • Perform legal and business research and communicate findings in memoranda; create electronic resource libraries as needed.
  • Collect, review and organize information and/or documents; create procedures for collection and storage of information; create procedures for law department or corporate practices; analyze or derive statistical or other mathematical data. 
  • Draft periodic legal reports and summaries for management; create, maintain and update charts of legal activities and expenses. 
  • Monitor developments in pending cases, filings and transactions, report to attorneys and management as necessary. 
  • Provide additional work as requested or assigned.
  • Have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to set priorities, successfully track and complete multiple tasks, meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work within cross-functional teams, take direction from multiple attorneys, attend to details, adhere to established work schedule.

Preferred Licenses, Certifications, Qualifications or Standards
Paralegal certificate or equivalent experience.  


Sr. Paralegal: 
In addition to the duties listed above, the Sr. Paralegal will assist in-house counsel as needed. May open new matters with outside counsel.

  • Five or more years working experience in a legal environment. 
  • Previous experience in employment, litigation, or the energy industry helpful. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic legal terms.
  • Proficiency in legal, internet, and traditional research tools. 
  • Strong organizational skills, particularly working with document control. 
  • Strong personal computer skills.
  • Proficient in Word and Excel. 
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently. 
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of company/corporate information.

  • Ability to obtain information despite real or perceived road blocks.  

Education

Bachelor's degree. (Typically, four years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)   

Certified legal assistant (CLA), certified paralegal (CP) or advanced paralegal (AP) designation will be given preference.
