Our Organization and Mission:

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is the state’s lead agency for environmental management and stewardship - protecting our air, water and land. The vision of DEP is to advance Florida’s position as a world leader in protecting natural resources while growing the state’s economy.

The Work You Will Do:

This position is part of the Florida Geological Survey’s (FGS) Geologic Sample Acquisition and Management section. The successful candidate will act as an assistant to the Curator in the FGS Geological Sample Collections Facility (repository). Duties include the physical preparation of geologic samples for archival storage, updating the FGS GEODES database and Microsoft Excel tracking files, assisting with the maintenance of the facility and the preservation of samples stored in the facility, and participation in Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) processes for physical samples and electronic records. These duties involve occasional heavy lifting, frequent work in a warehouse with limited climate control, use of power tools, and use of computers in both office conditions and field conditions.

The Difference You Will Make:

You will be supporting the work of FGS geologists to develop and improve the geologic maps that are used to inform policy decisions for environmental protection, land use, and water use.  Preservation of geologic samples makes it possible for researchers from government, academia, and industry to improve our understanding of Florida’s geology, particularly in areas where drilling may no longer be practical or economically possible.  These advancements in understanding will make it possible to better protect the environment, create responsible economic development, and improve the lives and welfare of all of Florida’s citizens.

How You Will Grow:

DEP encourages its leaders to constantly innovate and seek efficiencies. We believe in supporting and encouraging you as you take on important and often complex projects while offering you the opportunity to gain valuable experience quickly. Opportunities in this position include learning documentation procedures and material handling procedures critical to good science, becoming familiar with geologic material from Florida, interaction with professional geologists and work in a professional environment.

Where You Will Work:

Tallahassee, Florida’s Capitol City, lined with rolling hills, oak trees, and canopied roads combines old world charm with a modern pace of life. Home to two major universities as well as state government, Tallahassee is a mid-sized city in the heart of Florida’s Big Bend. Tallahassee is a highly desirable location for both those seeking their first job or those ready to enter the next exciting chapter in their career. FGS Geologic Sample Collections Facility located on Commonwealth Boulevard adjacent to the intersection of Capitol Circle NW and I-10.
