Summary

Additional $1.00 per hour shift diff applies working evening and / or night shifts.

Performs routine non-professional tasks in support of nursing service, including tasks involving minor personal services for patients and/or residents at a hospital, nursing home, or health related facility; does related work as required.  For the continued provision of care to residents, overtime may be required, and is an essential function of the nurse aide position.
This work involves the routine care of residents and the performance of such indirect or non-nursing services for residents as are not required to be performed by a Licensed Practical or Registered Professional Nurse.  Work is subject to general supervision, except activities concerned with actual care of residents, which are performed under direct supervision by the Registered Professional Nurse in charge.

Examples of duties

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:   (Examples only)
  • Assists in walking, feeding, bathing, and related restorative and rehabilitation care activities for patients and/or residents and aids in caring for their personal needs and comfort;
  • Assists nurses in lifting and turning patients and/or residents, in restraining disoriented patients and/or residents, in holding patients and/or residents and may assist in preparing them for surgery;
  • Helps regulate number of visitors and gives information to visitors in accordance with instructions from the nurse in charge;
  • Assists professional nursing personnel in carrying out assigned range of motion, promotion, or self-help and independence activities and reality orientation;
  • Assembles information concerning the patients and/or residents condition and enters reports on the patient and/or residents records;
  • Clean and sterilizes equipment;
  • Labels and stores patients and/or residents clothes and turns over valuables to person designated by the facility;
  • May assist with care and moving of room furniture, fixtures, and supplies to help keep patients and/or residents safe and comfortable.
  • Documents in the electronic medical record, all services provided to the resident.
  • Provides for the personal grooming of residents under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse; to include but not be limited to bathing, oral hygiene, cuticle care, hair grooming, shaving, dressing, toileting and encouraging resident independence as directed by nurse;
  • Maintains resident environment by storing clean laundry, replenishing grooming and hygiene supplies, attending to room, comfort and safety and placing soiled clothing in appropriate hampers, changing bed linen and placing resident belongings in proper storage;
  • Provides nutritional needs of residents by: placing resident's meals  on designated tables and collecting dishes and utensils when meals are finished, records resident meal and liquid intake, encouraging resident to self-feed as indicated by nurse, help feeding if warranted and providing in-between meals with nourishments;
  • Assists resident in transfer and ambulation by re-positioning resident in bed as needed, transferring from bed to chair or wheelchair, transporting resident to treatments and therapy, ambulating resident as prescribed by physician and therapy assessment, encouraging resident to be independent with ambulation;
  • Communicating with residents, families and appropriate staff members to ensure quality resident care. These are complete when responsible nurse is informed of resident's change in physical, emotional and psycho-social condition and notations are completed. Incumbent has had reports by staff member of change in resident. In event of undetermined bruising and skin tears, appropriate accident and incident report is initiated and all care-givers have opportunity to provide feedback as to potential cause of bruise and/or skin tear;
  • Complete technical skills under guidance of licensed professional nurses by completing vital signs and recording results, collecting bodily specimens, recording fluid intake and subsequent output, recording elimination, including restraints and follows proper infection control protocol;
  • Maintains optimal resident environment by recognizing potential hazard and taking action to remove hazard obstacles adheres to all policies and procedures and follows principles of asepsis on resident contact;
  • Attends in-service requirements annually and continuing education courses;
  • All other related duties as required.
