The Network Install Engineer is responsible for providing network support and installation functions in the Network Support Group at OARnet. OARnet maintains and delivers services across the state’s 5,500-mile fiber-optic network backbone to support the connectivity relied upon every day by Ohio’s higher education, K-12 education, state and local government, public broadcasting, health care and research communities.

The overall responsibility of this position is installation and maintenance of various data communication equipment at the client and the POP/HUB sites. Specific responsibilities of the Network Install Engineer include:

• Evaluates, recommends and assists in the development and maintenance of network communications.

• Uses knowledge of LAN/WAN systems to help design external networks.

• Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and make improvements.

• Maintains and troubleshoots medium to complex network problems.

• Assists in design and recommends changes in network topology, maintenance and scheduling procedures and the administering of those changes.

Considerable amount of travel within Ohio is required; occasional out-of-state travel required. The engineer often must be accessible via phone when not in the office and have internet access to perform certain work assignments from home. Off-hours work may be required each week. On-call 24 hours/day (on rotating basis) to respond to escalated network problems on resolution and procedures.

Required Education/Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in computer and information science, related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• 2 years of experience in networking or related field.

• Familiarity with network cabling standards and concepts, practices and procedures within the networking field.

• Experience with large networks, including the internet, network monitoring and high-speed networks.

• Knowledge of Cisco or Juniper Equipment/Routing, TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, test equipment and software
