The opportunity

The Product Development and Engineering job family is the core of Magic Leap’s revolutionary AR capabilities. These highly collaborative teams are responsible for our organization's engineering and technical operations, performing cutting-edge and complex scientific research and development that is 'defined as we build' to create new AR products, features, and marketplaces. Activities include undertaking research, design, development, and implementation activities to improve Magic Leap’s AR products and services;  designing, constructing, testing, and operating equipment; ensuring that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness, and performance are met in production processes; interpreting plans, drawings, and specifications; and collaborating across all Magic Leap teams to ensure our AR product and features provide a high-quality, immersive experience, meeting and exceeding our customer’s needs and our business objectives.

As a Mechanical Engineer on the Calibration Team, you will develop calibration stations for leading-edge AR products from concept-phase to implementation. These stations feature mechanical, electrical, & optical components. You will deliver factory-appropriate calibration solutions backed by fundamental engineering principles, prototyping and rigorous testing. The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator, reaching across organizations to clarify expectations, achieve 'buy-in' where appropriate, and see their design through to the final customer. The ideal candidate is willing to independently pursue new skills/knowledge as needed to complete projects.

This position is based at our Plantation, FL (HQ) site and provides a hybrid working style which requires one to be on-site for at least 4 days a week. Relocation assistance offered.

What you’ll do

  • Develop mechanical concepts backed by fundamental engineering principles, calculations, simulations, tolerance analysis, etc.
  • Drive implementation of calibration stations from concept-phase to factory-appropriate solution (on-site and at international manufacturing facility).
  • Develop verification processes to ensure station precision and accuracy over time and across duplicate stations.
  • Drive collaboration across Calibration and Factory to bridge communication gaps, sync dependencies, and support transparent exchange of data.
  • Adept at problem-solving, issue resolution, and continued system improvement.  Understands when an off-the-shelf solution is appropriate and when creative, in-house designs are necessary.
  • Ideal candidates can identify short and long-term solutions, confidently schedule work, and close issues in a timely manner.
  • Implement/enforce processes that ensure a high standard of quality for mechanical design, testing, analysis, 3D CAD modeling, drawings/specs, BOM creation, etc.
  • Drive station development in sync with high-level product goals (eg. build schedule, budget, cycle time, performance, etc.)
  • The ideal candidate is hands-on and proactive, able to assemble/repair calibration stations, perform testing, manage shipping logistics, etc.

The experience you bring

  • 3+ years experience in manufacturing of consumer/enterprise electronics products.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience in an applicable field. We are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • Experience with precision machined components (tolerances down to +/-0.05mm), 3D-printed materials, sheet metal, T-Slot Framing, and kinematic mounting.
  • Experience with 3D CAD modeling (CREO and Windchill preferred).
  • Experience creating CAD drawings with appropriate GD&T notation.
  • Working knowledge of statistics for ANOVA analysis, Gauge R&R
