Job Description

Material Handling Area Yard Operator

Duties will include operating front end loader and other equipment as needed, load trucks, operate horizontal grinder, clean equipment, equipment maintenance, support site user needs, fill in for team members as needed, process mulch and compost materials, and monitor inventory levels. Operations will always be performed according to acceptable safety procedures and guidelines, ensuring equipment is kept in safe working condition. He/she will perform tasks assigned by the supervisor to complete projects in an efficient, accurate and timely manner. He/she may participate in snow removal.

What you’ll do in this position:

Safety, Public Relations, Vehicle Maintenance and Inspections – to be followed 100% of the time

  • Operate all equipment in a safe, effective manner to minimize the risk of injury and property damage
  • Deal with campus, MTC and Church employees/visitors in a professional manner
  • Operate and maintain a clean university vehicle
  • Perform daily pre and post trip inspections

Heavy Equipment Operation

Operate front end loaders

  • Load trucks of all sizes and roll-off dumpsters
  • Monitor inventory levels
  • Tracking loads/materials for reporting/payment requirements

Operate horizontal grinder

  • Grind tree and wood waste
  • Process green waste and make compost mixtures
  • Daily maintenance and cleaning of machine

Support team in operating heavy equipment

  • Support screening operations as needed
  • Operate compost turner as needed
  • Operate commercial vehicles as needed
  • Snow removal as needed
  • Recycling and trash operations support as needed
  • Perform tasks assigned by supervisor
  • Assist with miscellaneous projects

Accurate Record Keeping

  • Time tracking daily
  • Training documentation
  • Efficient tracking of materials/loads/fuel

Equipment Maintenance

  • Clean equipment and parts
  • Perform inspections
  • Grease and maintain fluid levels

What qualifies you for this role:

Required:

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • Experience operating equipment, such as forklift, loader, skid steer, track hoe, etc.
  • Ability to pass post-offer physical exam
  • Ability to climb ladders
  • Effective supervising, mentoring, and training skills
  • Ability to work courteously with employees and patrons of the MTC, Temple, and BYU

       

Preferred:

  • Commercial Driver’s license

Pay Grade: 48

Typical Starting Pay:

 $20.00 to $25.75 an hour
