Job Summary:

The Marine Field Service Technician provides customer service directly at an off-site customer location. This position is responsible for the troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and reconditioning of various CAT engine models.

Essential Functions:

  • Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards
  • Performs minor repairs and minimal troubleshooting offsite with minimal supervision
  • Performs minor troubleshooting and minimal diagnoses of engine malfunctions and failures
  • Removes and installs parts, disassembles and assembles components to CAT specifications
  • Tests makes adjustments, and verifies proper operation of all repairs and adjustments
  • Prepares and completes all job-related documents, writes service reports, orders parts, and maintains clear customer records; in addition, accesses databases required to complete job
  • Operates equipment and vehicles with possession of all necessary licenses and certificates
  • Maintains service vehicle inspection records, daily inspections, and driver logs as required by the Department of Transportation
  • Adheres to contamination control and HAZMAT rules and regulations
  • Maintains all company equipment, tools, and the vehicle in good, clean, and working order
  • Communicates job progress to supervisor and customer as needed
  • Completes assigned jobs and tasks to meet flat rate time and re-work standards
  • Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs
  • Completes all assigned Technician Training Path courses and safety training in a timely and proficient manner
  • Projects professionalism with both internal and external customers, including personal appearance; may be relied upon to act as a mentor to lower-level technicians
  • Requires regular and punctual employee attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Basic knowledge of equipment and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance
  • Knowledge of engines, components, electronic systems, and panels
  • Basic diagnostic and trouble-shooting skills
  • Ability to select the proper equipment or tools needed to perform a job
  • Proficiency and knowledge of current computer software, related hardware, and knowledge of marine engine electronic systems
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with both internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures and practices
  • Planning and organizing skills to prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to operate a crane and forklift, and obtain required certifications/licenses
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under fast-paced, time-constraining circumstances
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
  • The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects

Education and Experience:

  • More than two years of marine technical experience required, three or more years preferred
  • A high school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • MSHA certification preferred
  • Crane, Chain hoist rigging certifications preferred

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Travel:

  • Frequent travel to customers’ location with overnight stay required

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s license required
  • A transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) preferred
  • Water Survival Training preferred
  • Caterpillar Marine Certification preferred
  • Must own required tools to perform repairs

  • Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue
