About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE

At Peloton, we treat Data as a Product - a valuable asset and a critical piece of our decision making process. The Data Foundations team is responsible for providing several capabilities:

  • Persistence for all client and service data, across multiple persistence solutions (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, Elasticache, Redshift, Kafka, and graph databases).
  • Ingestion services, client libraries, and access patterns for all our operational persistence.
  • Retrieval services and libraries, caching services, and front-end infrastructure for engineering teams to understand and consume operational data.
  • Processing and routing pipelines that ensure privacy and compliance policies as data flows through the enterprise at the speed the business demands.

We are looking for an engaged, hands-on Engineering Manager to join our Data Foundations team to build and provide leadership across all four capabilities. The ideal candidate will have a passion for quality code and architecture, and will provide technical leadership as well as individual technical contribution as part of a team.Your team will be solving a wide range of problems related to data protection and security, observability across the entire ecosystem, and ensure the systems your build and support are highly available, secure, and provide the throughput our Members and Team Members demand. Our Members trust us to keep their data safe and secure, and you’ll play a key role in earning and keeping that trust, from guidance and implementation of data classification and retention policies, and ensuring sensitive data is protected and anonymized appropriately throughout the entire data lifecycle. As a people leader you will be responsible for career development and growth of your engineers, ensuring that they are motivated in doing their best work in line with their interests.

YOUR DAILY IMPACT AT PELOTON

  • Staff and manage a team of engineers responsible for the Data Foundations, from data ingestion and routing, and meet all SLOs and SLAs for the products your team owns.
  • Be focused on eliminating toil within your team and your own customers through self-service tooling, and internally developed and published libraries for all the products you own.
  • Represent the Data Foundations team in internal customer meetings, cross functional workstreams,  maintain roadmaps for the team, help prioritize customer requests and drive iterative delivery of projects enabling our stakeholders to be successful.
  • Establish team level performance indicators to measure efficiency of the team’s output and impact to the Team Members we support.
  • Inspire a healthy, collaborative, empathetic engineering culture in line with Peloton’s values, helping your team develop and grow along the engineering journey at Peloton.
  • Ensure that data pipelines are implemented with quality and observability included, along with appropriate encryption and tokenization techniques.
  • Partner closely with our security teams, ensuring logging and auditing mechanisms are in place and responding to any security incidents around the data infrastructure your teams support.
  • Champion engineering and operational excellence, drive database reliability and incident management by establishing metrics and processes for assessment and improvements.

YOU BRING TO PELOTON

  • 8+ years of software development experience in the data platform and datastores disciplines. You should be familiar with the inner workings of a data pipeline, understand the difference between streaming and batch processing data pipelines, and understand how a database engine builds a query plan.
  • Demonstrable experience in operating and supporting infrastructure within a cloud environment like AWS. Familiarity with orchestration tools like Kubernetes, and data orchestration services like Glue, Data Lake Formations, and Airflow is a plus.
  • Direct, hands-on experience in operating and managing a highly available datastore in production cloud environments (preferably AWS), such as PostgreSQL or MySQL, DynamoDB, Elasticache, or Kafka. Your team supports many different storage solutions, and familiarity with at least one is strongly preferred.
  • An understanding of the tradeoffs between data encryption and tokenization mechanisms, and how to manage the performance tradeoffs between them.
  • Prior experience managing and growing individual contributors. Your feedback and coaching is critical to the success of your Team Members.
  • Experience with Python or Scala (or comparable high-level language) and experience working on large di
