The Research & Development Department’s mission is to set the industry standard by finding new materials, methods, and technologies to change the built environment and how we work. The R&D Robotics Field Operations Engineer will be responsible for evaluating, deploying, and scaling our strategic robotics initiatives in challenging real-world environments. They will coordinate across interdisciplinary teams, including project teams, consultants, hardware developers, software developers, subcontractors, and suppliers. This team member will report to the R&D Robotics Lead and serve on an interdisciplinary team conducting research and developing novel robotics solutions for construction.
The ideal candidate will excel at the intersection of robotics and construction, will be highly organized, and capable of working independently to execute complex projects. They will lead the robotics field operations efforts with a focus on driving the adoption of mature robotics solutions across jobsites. They will routinely collaborate with external partners to evaluate capabilities, address gaps in functionality, and align development roadmaps. They will lead efforts to establish standard operating procedures, best practices, safety policies, training materials, and deployment documentation for robotics deployments.
Candidates should be passionate about both robotics and construction, able to learn outside of their trained competency quickly, and excited to roll up their sleeves when needed. Key to this position are strong written and verbal communication skills, project management skills, creative thinking, relationship management, and meticulous attention to detail. Most importantly, candidates should be curious and excited about operating in new territory without fear of failure.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead the development of business case and deployment strategies for new robotics solutions to drive adoption across jobsites.
Lead the development of standard operating procedures, best practices, safety policies, training materials, and deployment documentation.
Lead efforts to train and provide ongoing real-time support to project teams and field technicians as they integrate robotics into jobsite workflows.
Lead the management, inventory, and maintenance of a growing robotics fleet and associated payloads.
Serve as a subject matter expert for aerial robotics, ground robotics, trade robotics, reality capture, and related emerging technologies.
Develop and manage complex budgets, schedules, and success metrics for strategic initiatives at various stages of maturity.
Manage evaluations and pilots of emerging robotics technologies to continuously advance robotics service offerings, use cases, and best practices.
Build relationships across operations, site operations, and subcontractors to understand their needs, develop goals, and ensure initiatives are aligned to the needs of our project teams.
Act as brand ambassador for the firm, representing the company in industry and professional organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS
US Citizenship (as required by several of HITT's Federal Government clients).
Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) in robotics, engineering, commercial construction, or architecture.
Minimum 5 years of experience developing and deploying robotics solutions in complex, dynamic, real-world environments.
FAA Remote Pilot Certification and extensive familiarity with aerial reality capture, automated docks, BVLOS regulations, GNSS/RTK/PPK, and flight operations in restricted airspace.
Experience with reality capture technologies including 3D laser scanning, 360-cameras, photogrammetry, gaussian splatting, and digital twins.
Familiarity with surveying principles, robotic total stations, geospatial data management, and coordinate systems.
Proficiency in understanding construction documents, shop drawings, and other design communication tools.
Familiarity with construction design, management, and BIM coordination software (e.g., Revit, Navisworks, Procore, ArcGIS).
Previous experience on commercial job sites preferred.
Ability to work independently in the field and collaborate with diverse project teams.
Ability to travel to jobsites in the Northern Virginia area
