Department Specific Functions

The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has a great opportunity for a Full Time Manager, Research Lab. The Manager, Research Laboratory oversees the day-to-day operations of Cancer Center Members laboratories, including maintenance and upkeep and ensuring an efficient and effective laboratory working environment:                                                                                                                                                  

  • Serves as interim lab manager for new recruit laboratories at the Cancer Center and provides training for new lab managers

  • Ensures Sylvester laboratories comply with State of Florida Medical Gas license requirements

  • Serves as the back-up contact for critical equipment registered to Cancer Center members

  • Maintains Sylvester common equipment in facilities across the Medical Campus and renews service contracts on an annual basis

  • Provide regulatory protocol assistance to new and existing laboratories

  • Ensure Cancer Center members and lab staff complete the University required laboratory safety trainings

  • Serves as disaster preparedness resource for all Sylvester research laboratories

  • Maintains Sylvester equipment inventory system

  • Requests capital equipment quotes for new and existing research investigators

  • Formulates and implements short- and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories.

  • Implements laboratory policies and procedures and coordinates with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services.

  • Serves as a liaison between investigators, research personnel, and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities.

  • Advises on technical procedures, techniques and equipment, and maintains conformance with specific operational standards.

  • Maintains quality checks on the safety of laboratories and insures maintenance of the facilities according to good laboratory practices.

  • Installs and maintains laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations.

  • Assures that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in standard operating procedures and equipment specific requirements.

  • Assists in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations.

  • Compiles and prepares reports and analyses, setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations and conclusions.

  • Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.

  • Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:                                                                                                                                                

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field required.

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of business and management principles.

  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.

  • Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan.

  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others.

  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.

  • Mechanical ability and dexterity when performing the different lab and animal-related techniques.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail. Detail-oriented.

  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office is required

  • Knowledge of the use and maintenance of laboratory facilities and/or equipment.

  • Knowledge of animal husbandry requirement
