About the team

The Data Engineering team provides Zillow with the analytical data and tools to power the company’s business insights, which includes critical business metrics, reports, analytics, and ML models. We work multi-functionally with teams across the organization on everything Data, including infrastructure management, collection, observability, ingestion, transformation, integration, governance and security.

About the role

We are looking for an outstanding Engineering Manager to lead our Governance team. In this role, you will partner with other senior leaders and business collaborators to set the strategy, vision, roadmap and implementation of Zillow’s Data Governance program, which includes the software, regulatory and process components required to complete the program at scale. As the Engineering Manager for the Governance team, you will improve technology and methods to lead the company’s governance efforts and enhance the quality, breadth and understanding of our data assets across our very diverse and growing user base. 

In particular, this role will require you to do the following:

  • Promote the practice and benefits of a strong governance program, as well as leverage ML techniques to discover, tag and secure data throughout its lifecycle
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive enterprise governance program as part of the overall data platform strategy, across a complex business ecosystem including many different teams and user personas
  • Define global data quality, lineage, metadata and observability standards and frameworks to promote a federated data strategy that balances centralization and team-based ownership.
  • Collaborate with partners across Zillow brands to define the strategic direction, vision, and feature prioritization for data observability and cataloging.
  • Establish collaboration with product management and prioritize a backlog of governance related initiatives to enact the defined product vision
  • Navigate a varied landscape of technology, business processes and teams to operationalize investments in data analytics and data science.
  • Identify, remove, and prevent roadblocks across teams
  • Partner with product engineering and InfoSec teams to ensure our solutions are secure, scalable, highly performant and governed in a way that aligns with all data privacy and regulatory requirements.
  • Define, implement and maintain software libraries and tooling to promote and support observability and quality for data practitioners 
  • Solicit feedback from other leaders and team members to set internal team goals to improve team functions, while designing the plans to achieve these goals.
     

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any of the 50 US States, with limited exceptions. In certain cases, an employee in a remote-designated job may need to live in a specific region or time zone to support customers or clients as part of their role.

In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York and Washington the standard base pay range for this role is $166,300.00 - $265,700.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York and Washington and may not be applicable to other locations.

In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

  • Extensive knowledge of modern data management and governance practices in regulated (GDPR, CCPA, GLBA, etc.) environments
  • Experience leading all aspects of metadata management, data quality, data profiling and data observability frameworks and techniques.
  • Familiarity with a variety of data ecosystem tools, such as data lakes, lake houses, warehouses, ETL, BI, data science; and languages (SQL, Python)
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (preferably in a technical field such as Computer Science or Computer Engineering) or demonstrable experience designing/building technical products across different data domains
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering management experience, including leading multiple teams, preferably remote or distributed.
  • Solid sense of ownership, with the ability to think big and adapt quickly.
  • Creative problem solver and master of cutting through ambiguity
  • Outstanding strategic and analytical abilities.
  • Knowledge of AWS tech stack and offerings
  • Adept at working in a fast-paced, agile, and collaborative cross-team environment
