About the role

GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF POSITION: The Custodian helps keep campus buildings clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. This role supports daily operations by maintaining classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas to keep buildings as attractive as possible.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Routine Cleaning - Clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, common areas, offices, corridors, lounges, carpets, and hard floor surfaces. Responsibilities include emptying trash and recycling, refilling restrooms, and cleaning supplies
  • Work Order Task - Perform cleaning and maintenance tasks as assigned through the work order system by the Custodial Lead.
  • Emergency Response- Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies such as spills, accidents, and safety concerns. Report maintenance or safety issues to supervisors.
  • Event Support - Assist with custodial and janitorial needs for campus events, including maintaining restrooms, event spaces, entrances, lobbies, and common areas. Support room set up for classes, meetings, and events.
  • Safety & Compliance - Use cleaning equipment and supplies safely. Follow all Ivy Tech safety policies, established cleaning standards, and applicable OSHA guidelines. Properly handle and store cleaning chemicals using Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and use required personal protective equipment (PPE). Report unsafe conditions and incidents to a supervisor.
  • Assist Security - Secure of all facilities at completion of operations. Provide assistance to campus security when needed and ensure proper key control.
  • Customer Service and Student Advocacy - Demonstrate strong customer service by being approachable, adaptable, and solution-focused. Show a positive attitude and support student success by addressing concerns in a professional manner.

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

Compensation: $16.50 - $17.50 per hour

Schedule

  • Typical schedule is Monday – Friday, 7am – 4pm.
  • Some evenings, weekends, holidays, or emergency work may be required depending on campus needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently
  • Competence in following both oral and written instructions.
  • Reliable and able to work as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in an academic or state organization.
  • Industry-related training or certifications relevant to custodial work.
  • Prior custodial or cleaning experience preferred but not required

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting and Carrying:
    • Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Heavier lifting or movement tasks should be done with assistance.
  • Stair and Ladder Use:
    • Move safely up and down stairs, service ramps, and/or ladders as part of the work.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Must be able to travel to various campus buildings using College vehicles.
    • Must hold or be able to obtain an valid Indiana driver's license.
  • Physical Stamina:
    • Must be detail-oriented, thorough, and flexible to adapt to changing tasks and environments.
    • Significant physical effort is required, including heavy lifting, bending, twisting, and working in various environmental conditions (hot and cold).
