Surgical Technologists assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and registered nurses, ensuring quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintaining a sterile field. They perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressings and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. Under the supervision of the surgical manager and coordinator/assistant, they also monitor and direct the activities of assigned surgical techs in the operating room to achieve optimum performance, efficiency and quality outcomes.

A caregiver in this role works days from 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with on-call requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Monitor, direct and oversee the activities of assigned Surgical Technologists in the OR.  

  • Perform duties of a Surgical Technologist as needed.  

  • Provide patient care in the OR by performing in a scrub role. 

  • Assist in the circulating role as needed.

  • Collaborate with SPD to maintain instruments and specialty trays.  

  • Provide performance documentation.  

  • Assume department leadership in the absence of the supervisor.  

  • Review surgical schedules and service line shift reports daily to ensure resources are available for surgical procedures.  

  • Seek ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain workflow and improve service.   

  • Perform and oversee precepting. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)

  • Surgical Technology Program accredited through CAAHEP or ABHES required. Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program. Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire. Acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)  

  • Internal caregivers: one year of experience in a Surgical Technologist role  

  • External future caregivers: two years of experience in a Surgical Technologist role

  • Requires a full range of body motion including ability to lift and/or bear the weight of 100 pounds with assistance, or more while pulling, lifting, pushing and transferring patients to and from various apparatus; regularly pushes moderate to heavy weight of 100
