Lead Sterile Processing Technicians are responsible for serving as a resource for decontamination, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of all surgical instruments. They troubleshoot equipment and product failure. They monitor other Sterile Processing Technicians in preparing complex case carts. They will lead daily activities in the absence of a Supervisor.

A caregiver in this position works nights 11:00PM to 7:30AM

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Performs case pull functions efficiently and accurately.
  • Supports departmental initiatives to meet productivity standards and adapt to flexible staffing needs.
  • Demonstrates proper handling of equipment, instrumentation, and chemicals while adhering to preventative maintenance schedules and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards during the decontamination process.
  • Scans, sorts, and inspects instruments for functionality and cleanliness, assembles instruments according to provided lists, wraps, and labels them following documented procedures.
  • Ensures proper cleaning, decontamination, assembly, and high-level disinfection of reusable instrumentation in accordance with AAMI standards.
  • Monitors and controls the distribution of supplies and equipment.
  • Performs record-keeping functions within the electronic tracking system, including processing, sterilization, and quality assurance documentation.
  • Participates in in-service education to stay updated on best practices and industry standards.
  • Builds case carts using electronic preference cards and dispatches them to appropriate locations.
  • Required to complete preceptor courses and preform preceptor duties and assist in training technicians within their department.
  • Coordinates the activities of their department
  • Provides technical expertise for all customers, internal and external.
  • Troubleshoots all processing equipment problems, including washers, sonics, endo processors, cart washers, sterilizers and the instrument tracking system.
  • Seeks ways to eliminate errors, reduce turnaround time, maintain work-flow and improve customer service.
  • Follows department policies when processing equipment, instrumentation, and chemicals.
  • Performs QA testing on instrumentation and equipment.
  • Adheres to personal protective equipment standards in decontamination process.
  • Demonstrates use of Process Improvement Standards (PIS) techniques and philosophies.
  • Performs all Certified Technician duties as outlined in job description.
  • Monitors and controls supplies and equipment, resolves any related issues.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the proper handling of equipment, instrumentation, and chemicals.
  • Directs the activities of the SPD staff.
  • Provides input on performance reviews and progressive disciplinary actions for assigned caregivers.
  • Reviews shift reports to ensure adequate resources are available.
  • Uses the department's instrument and productivity tracking program to maintain accurate records regarding sterilization and set assembly count-sheets.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma/GED  
  • Sterile Processing certification (e.g. CRCST/CSPDT or CFER/CER) are required  
  • Minimum five year experience as a sterile processing , central
