Position Summary

The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work , and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

The position is for a Civil Engineer with proven site development design and technical leadership/mentoring experience. It is part of the Substation Engineering - Civil Engineering Team within Transmission Engineering -Duke Energy Carolinas (DEC). This position and the team are in the Duke Energy Plaza in Charlotte, NC. The team is responsible for a wide variety of Civil Engineering activities associated with Transmission Substations including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Site development and permitting support for new and expanding Substations

  • Design, implementation and maintenance of oil spill mitigation plans and measures (SPCC) for Substations in the Duke Energy Carolinas West Region

  • Structural and foundation design, analysis, and testing for Substation structures and equipment

This Lead Engineer position is expected to have a high degree of proficiency in site development and permitting support. This skill set will enable them to support and design planned project work, troubleshoot various Civil-related issues that arise across our region, provide QA support to internal/external design resources, and actively support the growth and improvement of the Civil Team. This Lead Engineer position will also work alongside our current Lead Engineer supporting structural and foundation design to develop and implement key strategies/improvements across the team. In addition to technical proficiency, the Lead Engineer position is expected to maintain a positive, collaborative attitude that helps foster growth within the team while improving relationships with our stakeholders. This individual will be a mentor and a play a significant role in the overall success/culture of the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate leadership in all areas relating to the Substation Engineering - Civil Team.

  • Facilitate recurring team/individual meetings focusing on current and upcoming projects/initiatives that impact the team, workload capacity, technical processes, upcoming changes to design/work methods, etc.

  • Frequent engagement and collaboration with primary stakeholders of the Civil team (I.e. Substation Engineering – Physical Design, Transmission Line Engineering, Siting Permitting & Engagement, Resource & Project Management, etc.)

  • Scope, design, and QA Civil projects that have a high degree of complexity and risk

  • Assign, manage, and review Civil work completed by internal resources and external design consultants. Collect and provide feedback to all resources.

  • Represent the Civil Team and Duke Energy Carolinas Region on various enterprise-wide initiatives and teams (i.e. Substation Peer Team, Civil-related System Standards, etc.)

  • Coordination and support of Construction Material Testing (CMT) and Geotechnical Testing vendors.

  • Proactively develop and implement process efficiencies within the Substation - Civil team. This can include new standards, workflows, best practices, checklists, design templates, etc.

  • Coaches and mentors other engineering and non-degreed engineering professionals.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex problems in area of expertise with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.
