Student Wellness Hub

The Student Wellness Hub provides a range of health services to McGill students with a focus on awareness, prevention, and early intervention. The Student Wellness Hub has a variety of clinicians that provide one-on-one appointments, therapy groups and other services. Within the Student Wellness Hub, the Healthy Living Annex focuses on health promotion and offers peer support programs for both the Macdonald and downtown campuses. 

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established methodology. Prepares materials and equipment. Compiles data. Demonstrates techniques. Maintains equipment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the execution of laboratory projects and experiments. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks according to established methodology in fields such as chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, histology, toxicology, microbiology, immunology and molecular biology.
  • Prepares and sets up materials and equipment. Performs a variety of assays, analyses and tests such as tissue culture, radiochemical assays, electrophoresis, chromatography and histological procedures. Participates in small animal handling and minor surgery.
  • Records results, performs calculations and compiles data. Maintains records and files.
  • Demonstrates the operation of apparatus or techniques.
  • Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and safety of the work area.
  • Maintains inventory. Purchases equipment and materials.
  • Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
  • Uses a variety of equipment such as balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, electrophoresis apparatus, electrophysiological recording apparatus, cryostats, microtomes, computers and audio-visual equipment.

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:

  • Ability to think logically and follow directions.
  • Comfortable with technology, willing to learn.
  • Proactive, ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and proven ability to multi-task under pressure with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven experience working with heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of medical field is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principals of laboratory safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete tasks under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative team environment as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities for time-sensitive issues, working efficiently on a tight schedule.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly transmit and receive information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a computerized environment using word-processing, databases, spreadsheets and presentation software.
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 on a scale of 0-4.

DEC III - Medical Laboratory Technology 2 Years Related Experience /

Hourly Salary:

(MUNACA Level F) $29.42 - $36.46
