About the role

Description

The Bergelson lab at NYU’s Department of Biology is looking for a highly motivated and independent individual to work as a Junior Laboratory Associate for three months (May 15 – Aug 15).

This position is for a trainee preparing for a research path. It will provide development of technical and analytical skills; supervision by senior scientists incorporating individual development plan in support of training goals and those of faculty mentor; and possible publication of research findings during appointment period.

The trainee will be part of a multidisciplinary project investigating the contribution of ecology, genomic architecture, and function on the evolution of plant resistance genes in A. thaliana, C.hirsuta and D. verna. Central to advancing the project goals is the generation of high-quality de novo long read assemblies of natural accessions of the polyploid plant species D. verna. The main responsibility of the successful candidate will be to generate assemblies from PacBio Hifi-sequencing data, the quality control and gene annotation of these assemblies, and the generation of pangenome graphs for subsequent comparative genomic analyses. The trainee will be expected to actively participate and contribute to project related meetings, and to acquire new expertise through a combination of direct training and mentorship by senior lab members, and self-guided study of relevant publications and pipelines.

Projects in the Bergelson lab center around the ecology and evolution of plant-pathogen interactions. One main line of research in the lab is understanding the mechanism shaping plant resistance gene evolution. For more information about our past and ongoing work, visit bergelsonlab.org.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $58,656 - $60,000, depending on experience. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a BS or MS in Biology, Bioinformatics or a related field, 3 years of research experience, excellent communication and organizational skills, and experience in de novo assembly and annotation of complex plant genomes, along with comparative genomics.
