The American Heart Association has an opportunity for a Prospect Research Intern in our Mission Advancement department. Mission Advancement is responsible for raising individual major gifts and foundation grants of $100,000 or more, as well as government grants, and estate gifts from donors who wish to make an impact and leave a lasting legacy. 

The work of the Mission Advancement team is centered on building strong donor relationships and providing opportunities for financial support that align with the donor’s financial capacity and interests.  The Prospect Research Intern will support the research needs of the Mission Advancement team in a variety of ways, described below.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 25 hours per week
  • Internship Duration: 5/22/2024 – 8/11/2024
  • Remote position
  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Responsibilities

Tasks could include things like the following:

Reporting to National Director of Prospect Research and Management, our intern will research key prospects and donors to inform major gift donor pathing, engagement, and strategies.

 

Research and Analysis

  • Conduct top-line research on individuals and institutional prospects using various online and offline resources.
  • Contribute to developing comprehensive profiles for the most promising prospects that include philanthropic capacity, charitable interests, affiliations, and connections.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of research findings.
  • Follow protocols established by the Data Quality and Reporting Manager.

Prospect Identification

  • Assist in the identification of new prospects by reviewing and analyzing lists, databases, annual reports, and other public sources.
  • Collaborate with team members to prioritize and categorize prospects based on their alignment with the American Heart Association.

Support Fundraising Strategies

  • Provide research-driven insights to inform fundraising strategies and engagement plans for prospects.
  • Participate in meetings to discuss research findings and contribute to strategic discussions.

Confidentiality and Ethics

  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.
  • Adhere to ethical guidelines and data privacy regulations when conducting research and handling donor information.

Qualifications

  • Candidates who are college juniors, seniors, or graduate students.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities and strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Research skills - An ability to do “deep dives” in individuals, companies and foundations.
  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • A highly motivated self-starter who creates opportunity does not wait for direction, is highly organized, and operates with limited management – this role must be resourceful.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
