About the role

Overview

Since 1972, Covenant House has served and advocated for youth and young families experiencing homelessness, human trafficking, and exploitation. Our overarching goal is to end homelessness among youth and young families by helping them achieve housing stability, heal from trauma, tap into their innate resilience, and hone their interests and skills to forge new pathways to independence. This work is carried out across Covenant House sites in 34 cities in the US, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras.

About the Role

Under the guidance and supervision of CHI’s AVP of Grants Management, the intern will gain hands-on experience working within a dynamic nonprofit finance team that provides financial oversight across 18 sites in a federated model. This is an excellent opportunity for a student interested in nonprofit finance, operations, or systems to contribute to meaningful organizational projects while developing professional skills in a collaborative environment.

Location: Hybrid (NYC metropolitan area). While this position is designed as a primarily remote role, intern is expected to work in person at our Manhattan office at least 1-2 times per month. Candidates outside of the NYC area may be considered provided they can travel to headquarters in Manhattan as needed.

Remuneration: Paid internship — $17/hour. Will also provide any documentation needed for academic credits, if the intern’s academic institution permits paid internships.

Duration: 3 months, starting September 2026 or earlier, and with the potential for extending through another academic semester (completion of an internship does not guarantee a job placement).

Hours: At least 15 hours per week but no more than 20 hours per week during traditional business hours (9am-5pm EST).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the build-out of CHI’s Finance Intranet by compiling standard operating procedures, resource materials, and training videos for use by the finance team and sites across the federation

  • Develop and organize general guidance materials for sites on CHI’s new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, NetSuite, including user-friendly reference documents and FAQs

  • Assist in drafting and organizing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for core finance team workflows

  • Support basic operational organization for the finance team including file management, document formatting, and SharePoint site maintenance

  • Participate in finance team meetings and contribute to planning and coordination of internal sessions and working group activities

  • Research best practices in nonprofit finance operations and help apply findings to CHI’s internal processes

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint)
