Job Description

The da Vinci Surgical System pushes the frontier of human-machine interaction by fusing robotic technologies into a core product experience – technologies such as 3D immersive vision, high-fidelity haptic interfaces and dexterous robotic manipulators. The Interaction Software Engineering team cuts across multiple technical disciplines to create products that make customers’ experience of using technically complex surgical devices safe, easy to learn, and confidence inspiring.
We are seeking an intern to work with the 3D/AR Interaction Software Engineering group on the development of natural user interface capabilities for the da Vinci Surgical System. A successful candidate is able to quickly learn new tools/technology, has excellent hands-on problem-solving skills and a strong willingness to incorporate new learnings & ideas in an iterative and collaborative design process.
Essential Job Duties
- Pursue development and integration of natural user interface technologies and exploratory features that enable new functional capabilities and collaborative methods for sterile and non-sterile users.
- Work with designers and subject matter experts to translate unmet user needs into technical requirements and implementation tasks.
- Support clinical and usability evaluations of functional prototypes to identify design and implementation shortcomings and opportunity for refinement
- Able to blend creative technical problem solving with practical software engineering
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Competency with C++ programming for Linux-based platforms
- Hands-on experience with developing and/or integrating natural user interface technologies, such as 3d input devices, haptic devices, eye-tracking, and speech recognition.
- High-degree of technical creativity with a passion for delivering the best possible user experience
University Hiring Program Eligibility Requirements:
- University Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking academic program in the Fall.
- Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) during a 10-12 week period starting May or June. Specific start dates are shared during the recruiting process.
Required Education and Training
- Current enrollment in a Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, or related degree-seeking program at the PhD level.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with GUI programming in application frameworks like Qt is a plus
- Experience with ML/AI tools and methodologies is a plus.
