Main Area of focus:

The Learning and Development Instructional Designer assists with designing and developing learning content to support training initiatives across the organization.

Position Summary:

The Learning and Development Instructional Designer is part of the Learning and Development team that creates and manages training content that is learner-friendly, relevant to the business's objectives, and effective in developing employees to become their very best. This position collaborates with project leads who partner with leaders across all businesses within Common Sail.

Main Accountabilities:

  • Collaborate with instructional project leads and business subject matter experts (SMEs) on a wide range of training projects in a variety of modes, including, but not limited to, building online courses using e-learning authoring tools, learning objectives assessments and tools, live and virtual instructor-led training, and job aides and guides.
  • Provide instructional design support to business trainers through collaborative course design teams.
  • Assist in developing course materials for face-to-face, hybrid, and online course delivery.
  • Generate the layout of the learning supports, including storyboards, persona learning, micro-learning, and script writing.
  • Complete training projects on time that adhere to business deadlines.
  • Independently create training content that is relevant to the needs of the learner/employee and business goals and objectives with minimal guidance.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of adult learning best practices in multiple learning settings.
  • Apply instructional design principles, tools, and techniques to learning opportunities to ensure training content is easy to understand, engaging, and satisfies various learning styles of the target audiences.
  • Ability to stay current with learning trends, tools, and technology to offer innovative opportunities and continuous improvement for our team and business.
  • Presentation skills to assist with in-person and virtual training as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • 2 - 5 years of field-related experience, bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Proficiency in or ability to learn e-learning authoring tools (e.g. Articulate, Storyline, Rise360, Adobe Creative Cloud, Synthesia, or similar platforms).
  • Experience with video and audio editing preferred.
  • Understanding of adult learning principles.
  • Ability to navigate within a Learning Management System (LMS) to manage and upload content.
  • Communicates effectively and collaborates with team members and business subject matter experts.
  • Experience delivering clear and engaging presentations, both in-person and virtually preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to recognize personal strengths and weaknesses and develop goals for professional growth and achievement.
