Job Summary
Under the direction of the Laboratory Medical Director, Director of Laboratory Services and Laboratory Business Manager. Responsible for the daily operations and management of client services, inpatient phlebotomy, and specimen receiving/processing. Provides oversight of Specimen Processing, Lab Assistant I and II personnel. Responsible for the activities, training of all personnel, and all daily operations of the Specimen Processors/Client Services and Lab Assistants. Works to ensure efficient and accurate workflow of the office and phlebotomy. Ensures all applicable policies and procedures are current and being followed by staff. Must support the mission, vision, values, and strategic initiatives of the organization and demonstrate a commitment to quality service.
Core Job Responsibilities
Prepares staffing schedules and work assignments for inpatient specimen processing/client services and phlebotomy staff with minimal overtime.
Maintains personnel records for the laboratory, computes payroll using payroll system, records benefit time used, and documents overtime.
Responds and assists in the resolution of client and patient issues or concerns in a timely fashion.
Presents him or herself in a professional manner; dresses in a professional manner, always wearing appropriate identification at eye level.
Serves as a resource to the technical laboratory staff in problem-solving activities related to specimen collection, processing, reporting and courier activities in collaboration with the Laboratory Services Outpatient Supervisor.
Coordinates orders for supplies and consumables needed for phlebotomy and processing. Manages inventory of collection and processing supplies, and requisitions.
Works with Laboratory Administration on the collection of QA data and the identification of opportunities for improvement including but not limited to monitoring staff productivity.
Attends and participates in departmental and assigned meetings arriving on time and prepared for the meeting discussion.
Works collaboratively with Clinical Laboratory Educator to develop and implement orientation programs for new staff and coordinates continuing education to ensure quality staff development. Instructs and trains employees as assigned in utilizing the laboratory computer, office procedures, specimen processing and phlebotomy.
Supervise and direct the work of non-technical staff to achieve optimum patient flow and cycle times appropriate for services.
Assist management by participating in interviewing and selecting new employees; and assure orientation and training for all new employees.
Education/Experience Requirements
Required: High School Graduate. At least two years experience in a licensed New York State Clinical Laboratory. Must have data entry, specimen processing, computer use, and be proficient in phlebotomy procedures, techniques and skills. A combination of experience, education, and/or training which substantially demonstrates the following knowledge and skills, and the ability to perform a range of duties similar to those listed above in large or small clinics. Supervisor or management experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Required: Valid NYS Driver's License
