POSITION OVERVIEW
We’re seeking a proactive and experienced In-house Attorney to lead all legal functions across our fast-growing, multi-state beauty and retail business. This role will serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership and collaborate closely with key departments including HR, Operations, Product, and Real Estate. The ideal candidate brings expertise in California employment law, wage + hour compliance, and class action defense, with a proven ability to navigate the complexities of a high growth, service driven business.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide expert counsel on multi-state employment law, with a focus on California wage + hour, worker classification, and leave policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws and regulations.
- Partner with HR on employee relations matters, internal investigations, policy development, and compliance training.
- Monitor and assess legal developments in employment, privacy, advertising, and related areas to identify potential business impacts.
- Ensure compliance with FDA, FTC, OSHA, ADA, and state cosmetology board requirements.
- Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including leases, vendor contracts, marketing/influencer agreements, and service partnerships.
- Manage pre-litigation matters, subpoenas, and relationships with external counsel.
- Oversee corporate governance, entity filings, and broader risk and compliance frameworks
- Protect intellectual property, reviewing brand, marketing, and advertising claims for legal accuracy.
- Lead and oversee outside counsel and external legal projects.
REQUIREMENTS
- J.D. from an accredited law school; active bar membership in good standing.
- 5+ years of legal experience, including time in both a law firm and in-house role.
- Expertise in employment law, privacy, contract, and real estate law.
- Proven success advising multi-unit , client focus business such as retail, wellness, or hospitality.
- Strong communication Ability to translate complex legal issues into practical guidance and advisement.
- Experience managing employment law matters across multiple states, with California required.
- Prior experience supporting retail or service-based companies is highly preferred.
