CALS Human Resources is a team of 15 HR and Payroll specialists that serve the college; partners with members of the CALS' community to promote distinctive performance and investment in successful outcomes by providing advice and consultation on workplace issues, policies, performance management and other human resource practices.
The Opportunity
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Human Resources Business Partner to join our team. This role will reside within the CALS Human Resources Team and will work closely with the Lab of Ornithology’s Associate Director, providing expert advice and counsel on human resource policies, strategic planning initiatives, and organizational needs. This position will report to the College Human Resource, Assistant Director.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide effective advice and counsel to directors, faculty, supervisors, and staff on HR policies, procedures, and related state and federal laws.
Facilitate and implement a full range of HR activities, including academic and non-academic search and selection processes, employee relations, position analysis and classification, and compensation and appointment processes.
Serve as primary support representative for Lab, including advising to senior management team on complex and strategic issues. Ensure regular communication with units on HR issues of importance.
Handle complex and sensitive issues requiring analysis, creative problem-solving, and confidentiality.
Work collaboratively with colleagues to identify client needs and develop solutions.
Participate in the development and implementation of HR programs, policies, and practices for CALS.
Assist senior management and program directors in proactively identifying and assessing organizational needs and in the planning, implementation and communication of change efforts intended to meet the strategic goals of the organization.
Execute training programs for faculty, staff, and supervisors on various university and college programs, such as the performance dialogue process.
Build and maintain partnerships within the CALS HR team and the broader HR community.
This is a full-time, exempt (40hours/week) Contract College position that is based in Ithaca, NY and fully on-site. Typical work hours are 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday with an expectation to be available at the Lab during core business hours.
What You Need
We are looking for a team member who is customer-service oriented, collaborative, a strategic thinker, adept at problem solving, and flexible in their approach to providing guidance based on the specific needs and preferences of the Lab. Additionally, you will:
Hold a Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 3-5 years experience, or equivalent combination.
Have proven expertise in quickly engaging and building successful cross-functional relationships.
Utilize outstanding interpersonal, organization, customer service, and training skills.
Provide timely, customer-focused, innovative, and effective solutions.
Have prior experience serving as a resource in the areas of position analysis and classification, employment, recruiting, compensation strategies, policy interpretation, and employee relations.
Have superior written and verbal communication skills.
Be experienced at using sound judgment, creativity, maintaining confidentiality, and the ability to manage multiple competing or changing priorities.
Demonstrate the ability to work with a broad array of constituents at all levels of the organization.
Be proficient with PC operating systems including Windows, database management and data analysis.
