Role and Responsibilities

Recent advances in supercomputer performance, new algorithms, and the availability of GPU-accelerated HPC systems in the cloud are spurring the growth of the commercial markets for large-scale data analytics and machine learning. Our research team at Hewlett Packard Labs is inventing and developing technologies to enable extremely large-scale computation, data analytics, and machine learning across a broad spectrum of applications. We welcome candidates with a PhD or equivalent experience in computer science or engineering, who are interested in a researcher and/or advanced development position. We expect candidates to have excellent software development and architecture skills for complex software systems. In addition, we expect candidates to have the ability to frame, execute, and communicate research, for example, via papers published in top-tier conferences or journals, patents, as well as design and build substantial artifacts that validate their research. We value the ability to work alone and in teams, excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong computer science and engineering background, and the desire to learn new techniques to solve problems.

Primary areas of focus will be (in decreasing order of priority) include: applying existing and novel hardware and software architectures to solve specific problems; distributed systems and networking; system management; scheduling; modelling and assessing performance at scale; software frameworks; programming models; and runtime systems.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee a team of other research engineers carrying out the investigation, design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects to generate new products, technologies, and intellectual property.

  • As principal or co-principal investigator, design overall research plan, including resource allocations, investigative procedures, and data guidelines, for a research project or program.

  • Develop, review and evaluate research plans, experimental designs, and project activities in accordance with research guidelines and standards; provide tangible feedback to improve research quality, scientific rigor, and ease of technology transfer.

  • Identify and evaluate new technologies, innovations, and external partner relationships for alignment with research roadmap and potential business value; create plans for integration and update into research and product architecture.

  • Represent the company at industry and scientific conferences and meetings; prepare and deliver literature and presentations for publication and peer review; create patent applications and supporting documentation.

  • Leverage recognized domain expertise, business acumen, and experience to influence decisions of executive business management, outsourced manufacturing and development partners, and industry standards groups.

  • Provide guidance and mentoring to less- experienced staff members to set an example of research engineering innovation and excellence.

Education and Experience

  • PhD degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or Engineering.

  • Proven capability to define and execute a research agenda.

  • Proven capability to effectively work in a team-based environment.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to design, develop and debug large complex software systems.

  • Excellent coding and debugging skills in both conventional languages such as C, C++ or Java, as well as scripting languages such as Python.

  • Familiarity with modelling techniques and performance evaluation
