JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, the Cheerleading Coach coaches the cheerleading squad and mascot for the Niagara University men's basketball games.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Select cheerleading squad by open tryouts.
• Select one or two people to be mascot.
• Supervise squad of ten or more cheerleaders and mascot at practices and games.
• Create and teach cheers and routines to cheerleaders.
• Coordinate practices.
• Coordinate local road trips for cheerleaders through athletic office.
• Adhere to athletic department policies and procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

% of Time

70% Select squad and mascot; create and teach cheers; run practices.

25% Supervise cheerleaders/mascot at games.

5% Complete paperwork, coordinate local road trips.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Ability to read and comprehend the English language sufficiently to be able to read and understand various forms, documentation, files and information in the department.
2. Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to be able to verify accuracy of purchase order items and costs.
3. Sufficient manual dexterity with proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine and fax.
4. Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries and communicate with others by telephone with or without reasonable accommodations.
5. Excellent organizational skills.
6. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
7. Ability to coach and teach cheers and routines instilling enthusiasm.
8. Ability to individuals into one cohesive group.
9. Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business on a regular basis.
10. Ability to work evenings and weekends.
11. Knowledge of cheerleading and mascot selection criteria.
12. Ability to perform all of the above essential job functions for a minimum of a seven hour shift with one unpaid meal break without a significant risk of serious injury.

ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

The functions of the position usually performed standing, but may require some amount of time sitting. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard, computer software applications, athletic moves involve extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others, or to otherwise demonstrate or explain how they can perform the essential functions listed above.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

1. High School diploma required. Bachelor degree preferred.
2. Training, beyond high school, in cheerleading or other related field.
