Position Summary

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) has an opening for a 12-month, 20-hour per week graduate assistant in the Office of the Dean.  The position supports the Associate Program Director for Faculty Affairs & Graduate Education and the Events Coordinator, providing general administrative support and executing specific projects related to faculty affairs, graduate education, and events.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating with units and other college offices in the planning process of internal and external events; including onsite event logistics
  • Managing the college newsletter and maintaining the college websites pertaining to faculty affairs and graduate education
  • Creating and tracking RSVPs, event flyers, and invitations; including coordinating and recruiting volunteers for events
  • Collect and organize data into a usable form for various projects pertaining to faculty affairs and graduate education
  • Other duties as assigned pertaining to the position

Examples of events include Maryland Day, BSOS Commencement Ceremonies, Spring Awards, Faculty & Staff Recognition Reception, and Holiday Reception - among others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with competing deadlines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
  • The ability to work effectively and collaborate with diverse groups including but not limited to university faculty and staff, university alumni, current students, and the public
  • Exercise sound judgement and make decisions under pressure
  • Think creatively, work effectively and independently

Preferences

  • Experience with Constant Contact platform, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Drive management.
  • Experience and understanding of basic personal computer skills

Remuneration:

This position is a 12 month graduate assistant position coinciding with the University’s academic calendar. This is a one year appointment, prorated based on start date, with possibility for renewal.

Remuneration will follow the standard rate for graduate students employees in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences plus tuition (up to 10 credits each Fall and Spring semester).

Time Requirement: Twenty hours (approximate average) per week

Physical Demands

  • The candidate should be able to lift and move items of up to 20 pounds
  • Workdays are generally Monday to Friday, flexible to semester schedule
  • Some weekend and evening hours may be required to support meetings/events.
  • Must have the ability to travel to meetings, events, etc. both on and off campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be a registered graduate student in good standing enrolled in a degree program at the University of Maryland and must be making satisfactory progress toward the degree.
